About The Position

This position involves shadowing an experienced electrician to learn and assist with various tasks. The apprentice will gain knowledge in reading blueprints, diagnosing and repairing electrical problems, and installing new electrical systems. Responsibilities include assisting journeymen in the planning, layout, installation, testing, and repair of electrical systems and equipment in accordance with industry standards and codes.

Requirements

  • 0-2000 hours (0-1 year) of experience working as an entry-level electrician or similar craft as a helper or laborer.
  • Basic knowledge of the electrical craft.
  • Developing knowledge in the installation or maintenance of electrical wiring, conduit, systems, equipment, and fixtures.
  • Developing knowledge in testing electrical systems with appropriate tools.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Must have all necessary tools (see Electrician helper tool list).
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected), which may include criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers and fractions rapidly and accurately.
  • Ability to listen to co-workers' suggestions, safety concerns, and recommendations, giving full attention and asking questions.
  • Ability to coordinate work with other crafts and co-workers.
  • Ability to produce quality work, meeting requirements of plans, specifications, and industry standards.
  • Ability to learn to read and understand plans and specifications.
  • Ability to visualize two-dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
  • Ability to assist in the storage, planning, and lay-out of materials.
  • Ability to assist journeymen in laying out work and learn to perform layout independently.
  • Ability to learn to observe functioning of installed equipment or systems to determine hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement.
  • Ability to notify supervision of any hazards observed and utilize safety stop work authority as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Assist a journeyman electrician and follow instructions.
  • Learn to use appropriate hand and power tools for tasks such as measuring, cutting, bending wire and conduit, drilling holes, and pulling wiring.
  • Assist in lifting, positioning, and fastening objects like wiring, conduit, and motors.
  • Perform minor repairs, such as replacing fuses, light sockets, bulbs, and switches.
  • Maintain tools and equipment, keep supplies and parts in order, and disassemble, repair, and reassemble defective electrical equipment.
  • Load, transport, unload, and furnish electricians with necessary materials, tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Clean work areas and restock supplies and materials.
  • Help install related items according to plans and specifications.
  • Perform other routine duties as directed by experienced craft workers.
  • Participate in all safety-related processes and programs, ensuring zero injuries.
  • Report all accidents and near misses to supervisors and participate in investigations.
  • Participate in pre-job work planning and safety discussions, identifying and correcting safety hazards.
  • Understand and respond appropriately to safety hazards and warning devices.
  • Understand, support, and follow lockout/tag out procedures.
  • Attend site-specific training and follow all outlined procedures.
  • Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Use effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Perform basic arithmetic operations rapidly and accurately.
  • Listen to co-workers' suggestions, safety concerns, and recommendations, providing feedback when appropriate.
  • Coordinate work with other crafts and co-workers.
