About The Position

The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) has openings for two Electrical Engineering Interns in our Electric System Integrity Department. This department is responsible for the engineering, design, and problem-solving for the Electric Utility's transmission, substation, and distribution assets. Potential projects include system load flow planning, protection and coordination studies, electrical equipment review and specifications, overhead pole line and underground cable design, and substation control projects. The ESI Intern will also assist with material specifications, system planning studies for the BWL’s Strategic Plan, and system improvement sketches including voltage cut overs. The intern will learn from and be supervised by a mentor within the department.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution in an engineering program with junior or senior status during the summer of 2027.
  • Must be enrolled in fall classes 2027.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Must successfully complete a background check, a substance screening and a physical (if applicable).

Nice To Haves

  • Preference in civil/structural engineering programs, but may include chemical, mechanical, industrial, reliability, or electrical engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with internal departments on various projects as assigned.
  • Assist with running planning studies and recommending various solutions to improve system reliability (Intern 1).
  • Assist with running various transmission planning studies and performing system protection studies and recommending device settings (Intern 2).
  • Utilize standard office software (spreadsheet, word-processing, database) and SAP.
  • Follow BWL Safety Manual and wear personal protective equipment for all field work.
  • Attend training and safety awareness and/or skills improvement as required.
  • Participate in the continuous improvement of the Asset Management System.
  • Comply with all BWL policies and work rules.
  • Maintain predictable and reliable attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Benefits

  • Starting Salary Range: $23.00 - $23.00
  • Pay Rate: $23.00 per hour.
