Install, test, troubleshoot, calibrate, repair and maintain all types of electrical, electronic and mechanical devices (i.e. conduit and electrical cabinets) and equipment used to measure the transmission and distribution of electric energy. This work may be performed on equipment that is either energized or de-energized as the occasion may necessitate, to provide and maintain reliable, safe, and efficient service. Maintain operating and maintenance records as required.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of an Electric Metering apprenticeship program
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of electric utility system operations, maintenance, and construction practices.
  • Poses a working knowledge of the National Electric Code and Company Standards.
  • Demonstrate general knowledge of the customer billing system.
  • Demonstrate mechanical aptitude and color perception.
  • Be able to operate hand and power tools.
  • Be able to operate computer terminals to process meter and transformer records.
  • Ability to use computer software programs (i.e., e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, and meter programs).
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of the theory and applications in electric metering.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to shift focus as priorities change to support emergent assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain meter shop cleanliness and order by performing routine duties such as packing, unpacking, cleaning shipping material etc.
  • Install, remove, troubleshoot, exchange and tests all types of electric metering devices (i.e. meters, recorders, pulse relays, communication equipment and associated interfaces, etc.). Metering devices specifically included are 480V self contained and 320 amp meters, and automatic meter reading field equipment.
  • Install and maintain specialized metering for the purpose of measuring energy management data collection, harmonic distortion, transformer losses, line losses, bi-directional energy flow, volt amp hours, and interval metering.
  • Install, remove, troubleshoot, exchanges and tests instrument transformers installations associated with electric metering. Testing includes validation of values associated with breakdown, ratio, polarity, phase angle burden / admittance values etc.
  • Maintain Data Acquisition network to facilitate remote meter reading (i.e. MV-90).
  • Upgrades obsolete meter installations to meet current standards including the installation of conduit, equipment, and wiring to facilitate change.
  • Test, calibrate, and repair standard test equipment (i.e. Digital Voltmeters).
  • Construct, install, remove, exchange, and troubleshoot primary metering installations (i.e. substation, inter – tie, etc.), as directed.
  • Connect archiving equipment such as recording voltmeters, power quality analyzers, etc. for information gathering, and may assist with analysis.
  • Investigate customer complaints and metering tampering/diversions, install locking and security devices as needed.
  • Diagnose and make repairs where no standard methods or specific directions are available.
  • Interpret wiring schematics and prints incidental to complex or non-standard jobs.
  • Assist in providing technical direction, assistance and training to internal and external customers in the area of electric metering.
  • Work with Company personnel and confer with electrical contractors and inspectors as required on matters pertaining to service equipment and metering installations, insure compliance with state, local, and Company regulations.
  • Invoke a stop work order if he or she becomes aware of a code or standard violation.
  • Perform post installation meter checks including operation of circuit analyzing equipment and interpreting results, meter multiplier verification.
  • Maintain a satisfactory operating stock of meters, metering equipment and service control devices for use within assigned territory.
  • Ship and receive meters, instrument transformers and other related items.
  • Use computer software for programming and reading electronic meters (including TOU and demand registers).
  • Perform customer complaint resolution tests and checks.
  • Bypass customer load when necessary using links or jumpers as applicable.
  • Work with customers to schedule a time to work at the customer’s premises.
  • Perform module (board level when possible) maintenance on solid-state meters.
  • Assist in storm work, by following specific directions and communicating effectively with others.
  • Observing safety rules and practices encourage safe work behaviors, and promptly correcting conditions and unsafe behaviors, which may lead to accidents.
  • Verify multi gang sockets associated with multiple accounts in a given facility are wired correctly.
  • Report to work fit for duty and free from the effects of Drug and alcohol abuse.
  • Perform other duties which are similar, related or incidental to this position.
