About The Position

This position involves installing, operating, and maintaining equipment and facilities associated with transmission and distribution electric plant under the close supervision of a Journeyman line worker. The role requires performing 13.8kV hot work on both overhead and underground systems. The job also includes constructing and maintaining energized overhead and underground distribution lines and related equipment, troubleshooting and repairing outages, and installing and connecting line equipment according to work orders. A strong awareness of hazards such as falling objects, falls, electric shock, electric flash, and vehicle/equipment operation is necessary, along with the proper use of safety equipment. Daily inspections, cleaning, testing, and maintenance of equipment are also key responsibilities, as is adhering to safe industry-accepted work practices. The role involves stocking trucks with materials, supplies, and tools, and maintaining a culture of safety and continuous improvement within the department using lean principles.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Basic understanding of electricity and electrical systems.
  • Must be able to successfully complete the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities' (IAMU) Lineman Apprentice Program in the agreed-upon timeframe.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with all audiences, including customers.
  • Excellent interpersonal and listening skills, with ability to build productive professional relationships and promote a team atmosphere.
  • Familiar with use of computers and mobile devices, including email, calendar, Internet browsers, and the Microsoft Office suite of products at a basic level.
  • Good problem identification, analysis, and solving skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, either as team leader or a member of a team.
  • Ability to drive results and ensure work is accomplished properly, safely, and in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work independently, effectively prioritize work, manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and adjust work priorities as needed.
  • Must have mechanical aptitude and be comfortable working with power and hand tools of all sizes.
  • Ability to develop, read, and interpret drawings, schematics, specifications, and technical manuals, including digital mapping applications.
  • Must be able to distinguish colors.
  • Must be able to climb poles and ladders and work from a pole or bucket truck (up to 100 feet) for extended periods under various types of weather/seasonal conditions.
  • Must be able to perform repeated tasks such as shoveling.
  • Must be able to operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, excavators, and skid steers.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required within 6 months of hire and be maintained while in the position.
  • Position is included in the Utility's DOT drug testing program.
  • Must comply with all safety and site rules at all locations.
  • At times employees will have to comply with customer facial hair policies.
  • Must be able to attend work on a regular basis, work overtime as needed and respond to callouts as needed.
  • Must maintain a method of communication in order to be contacted by MPW outside normal work hours.
  • Must be certified in CPR or become certified within 1 year of hire and maintain certification while in position.
  • Must be able to work in enclosed spaces.
  • Must comply with the Utility's Residency Policy.

Responsibilities

  • Constructs and maintains energized overhead and underground distribution lines and related equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Troubleshoots and effects repairs following all distribution line related outages, at any time, day or night, under close supervision.
  • Installs and connects all line equipment, single and multi-phase, following work orders.
  • Maintains knowledge of considerable hazards including falling objects, falls, electric shock, electric flash, and vehicle and equipment operation.
  • Performs daily inspections, cleans, tests, and maintains equipment to ensure proper working order and efficient operation.
  • Uses safe industry-accepted work practices and techniques when working around transmission and distribution lines.
  • Stocks trucks with required material, supplies, and tools.
  • Maintains a culture of safety within the department and supports safety programs.
  • Completes training appropriate for the position and provides safe working conditions and practices.
  • Maintains a culture of continuous improvement within the department.
  • Utilizes lean principles and other continuous improvement tools to maximize department efficiency.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
