Electric Drive System Design Engineer

Stellantis•Auburn Hills, MI

About The Position

The Electric Drive System (EDS) Design Engineer is responsible for the overall design of EDS and its components—including gearboxes, electric machines, and power inverter modules—as well as their manufacturing and assembly for automotive electrification applications. The role develops electrical and mechanical designs, with extensive thermal-management design and specifications for electrified propulsion systems, including low- and high-voltage MHEVs, PHEVs, and BEVs. The engineer develops CFD models in 1D, 2D, and 3D, advances EDS design processes and methodologies, conducts trade-off studies, evaluates design proposals, and recommends technical designs. The role provides design-related technical assistance to other EDS core functional teams, coordinates simulation and dynamometer testing, tracks emerging EDS technologies and benchmarking, and leads EDS and subcomponent design activities. The engineer also contributes to the EDS technical roadmap and develops design concepts to meet vehicle requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent engineering degree from an ABET-accredited university.
  • At least 8 years of industrial experience designing BIC EDS (eMotor, PIM, and gearbox) for different electrified propulsion architectures and applications, including BEVs, considering system efficiency, performance, NVH, cost, and other system constraints.
  • At least 5 years of thermal design and EDS design experience.
  • Experience designing, manufacturing, and assembling EDS thermal-design topologies, such as water-jacket, oil, hybrid, and air cooling.
  • Experience with EDS principles, modeling, and analysis using system optimization tools such as Simcenter AMESIM.
  • Extensive experience with EDS simulation and optimization tools.
  • Extensive experience with EDS thermal simulation and optimization tools, such as MATLAB, Simulink, MotorCAD, ANSYS, Fluent, or other CFD software.
  • Experience with EDS design for manufacturing and assembly, including DFMEA, PFMEA, DRBTR, and DRBFM.
  • Materials knowledge related to EDS subcomponents.
  • Knowledge of EDS technologies, including offset and coaxial designs, with or without an e-locker, disconnect, or oil pump.
  • Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent engineering degree from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Familiarity with automotive product development processes and project management.
  • Excellent problem-solving techniques and analytical ability.
  • Excellent leadership skills.
  • Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) knowledge.
  • Knowledge of Teamcenter and experience with NX in a production-release environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead overall EDS and subcomponent design and development, including electric machines, power inverter modules, and gearboxes.
  • Develop electrical, mechanical, and thermal-management designs and specifications for electrified propulsion applications.
  • Develop CFD models and further develop EDS design processes and methodologies.
  • Conduct trade-off studies, evaluate design proposals, and recommend technical EDS designs.
  • Provide technical assistance on EDS design matters to other core functional teams.
  • Coordinate simulation and dynamometer test activities.
  • Stay abreast of EDS technology and conduct benchmarking.
  • Participate in the EDS technical roadmap and develop design concepts to meet vehicle requirements.
  • As appropriate, own the test-to-learn process, including data collection and analysis of EDS performance, losses, and efficiency results.
  • Define requirements for an electric drive motor or its subcomponents, such as the electric motor, power inverter module, or gearbox.
