About The Position

The Canvasser supports the work of MFPS and its clients, including Mi Familia Vota and Mi Familia en Acción, by conducting voter registration, voter education, civic engagement, and mobilization activities within assigned Latino communities. This field-based position visits residential neighborhoods, businesses, community locations, and public events to engage community members using approved scripts, materials, forms, and outreach methods. The Canvasser collects and accurately documents voter-contact information, follows all reporting requirements, and handles voter-registration forms and community data securely. This is a seasonal, part-time position scheduled for up to 30 hours per week. Continued employment or an extension of the assignment may be considered based on business needs, available funding, employee performance, and other operational factors, but is not guaranteed.

Requirements

Previous canvassing, voter-registration, campaign, community outreach, customer service, organizing, sales, or public-facing experience preferred.
Experience working with Latino communities or other diverse communities preferred.
Experience using voter-contact databases, mobile canvassing applications, or other outreach technology preferred.
Demonstrated enthusiasm for civic participation and Latino community empowerment.
Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with individuals at different organizational and community levels.
Ability to learn and accurately communicate approved voter-registration and voter-education information.
Ability to follow scripts, instructions, turf assignments, reporting requirements, and safety procedures.
Strong interpersonal, listening, conflict-resolution, and customer-service skills.
Ability to remain professional and composed during difficult or unexpected interactions.
Strong dependability, punctuality, accountability, and follow-through.
Ability to accept direction, coaching, and constructive feedback.
Strong attention to detail and ability to complete forms and records accurately.
Legible handwriting required.
Ability to use a mobile telephone, tablet, canvassing application, or comparable field technology.
Ability to protect confidential voter, community-member, employee, and organizational information.
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a field team.
Professional proficiency in English and Spanish preferred.
Ability to work up to 30 hours per week, including flexible daytime, evening, and Saturday schedules.
Ability to travel throughout assigned communities and field locations.
Must meet all eligibility, appointment, training, and certification requirements applicable to individuals who collect or submit voter-registration applications in the assigned jurisdiction.
Depending on applicable law, this may include being registered or eligible to register to vote.
Passion and enthusiasm for promoting political engagement within the Latino community.
Must be able to work flexible hours.
Some Saturday event participation is required.
Ability to effectively communicate with people at all levels and from various backgrounds.
Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
Valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and a reliable vehicle, preferred.

Responsibilities

Canvass assigned residential neighborhoods, businesses, community locations, and public events.
Engage community members regarding voter registration, voter education, voting by mail, Get Out the Vote activities, and other approved civic engagement initiatives.
Support approved efforts to identify, educate, register, and mobilize eligible voters.
Encourage civic participation within Latino communities using approved and culturally responsive outreach practices.
Communicate accurate, non-misleading, and approved information.
Use only authorized scripts, talking points, forms, literature, digital tools, and calls to action.
Ask required questions and accurately document community-member responses.
Respect individuals who decline participation or ask that outreach end.
Refer legal, policy, media, complaint, or other complex questions to the Canvass Lead or other designated supervisor.
Avoid making promises, representations, or commitments beyond delegated authority.
Represent MFPS and its clients professionally in all community interactions.
Provide voter-registration applications and approved assistance in accordance with applicable law and organizational procedures.
Review voter-registration forms for apparent completeness without altering or completing information on behalf of an applicant unless specifically permitted by law and organizational procedure.
Protect completed and partially completed voter-registration forms from loss, damage, alteration, unauthorized access, or disclosure.
Maintain required custody, tracking, storage, and submission records for voter-registration forms.
Return all completed, incomplete, spoiled, or unused forms according to established procedures and deadlines.
Promptly report lost, damaged, incomplete, altered, or potentially mishandled forms.
Never discard, withhold, falsify, prefill without authorization, or alter voter-registration forms.
Never represent a job application, petition, survey, or other document as a voter-registration form, or a voter-registration form as another type of document.
Avoid coercion, intimidation, misrepresentation, or offering unauthorized incentives in connection with voter registration.
Obtain and maintain any registration, designation, appointment, certification, or training required to conduct voter-registration activities in the assigned jurisdiction.
Immediately report suspected voter-registration misconduct, falsification, form mishandling, or other compliance concerns.
Report to the assigned office, staging location, or field location on time and prepared for the scheduled shift.
Participate in required pre-shift briefings, trainings, safety reviews, and campaign updates.
Review and understand assigned turf, schedule, script, materials, goals, check-in expectations, and reporting requirements.
Travel through assigned turf and complete outreach activities within designated geographic boundaries.
Maintain regular communication and required check-ins with the Canvass Lead.
Follow instructions concerning breaks, transportation, meeting locations, shift completion, and return procedures.
Return all organizational materials, voter information, equipment, identification, and supplies at the end of each shift.
Promptly notify the Canvass Lead of delays, inaccessible turf, community concerns, equipment problems, or other barriers.
Do not enter private homes or restricted locations unless specifically authorized by organizational policy.
Follow applicable property-access, solicitation, and trespass requirements.
Accurately record doors knocked, successful contacts, voter-registration activity, commitment cards, responses, and other assigned metrics.
Enter information into VAN, MiniVAN, spreadsheets, mobile applications, databases, or other approved systems.
Maintain legible, complete, accurate, and timely written and electronic records.
Follow all established coding, data-entry, reporting, quality-control, and documentation procedures.
Review assigned records for completeness before submitting them.
Submit daily reports, forms, materials, and data within established deadlines.
Respond promptly to reasonable requests for clarification or correction.
Protect voter, community-member, employee, and organizational information.
Use voter and community data only for authorized organizational purposes.
Promptly report suspected data loss, unauthorized access, privacy incidents, or significant data-quality concerns.
Follow all workplace, field, vehicle, weather, heat, emergency, and incident-response procedures.
Attend required safety training and participate in daily safety briefings.
Remain aware of traffic, animals, weather, terrain, neighborhood conditions, and interactions with members of the public.
Use the buddy system, check-in procedures, and assigned communication methods as directed.
Avoid entering areas or remaining in situations that appear unsafe.
Discontinue an interaction and contact the Canvass Lead if a community member becomes threatening, aggressive, or hostile.
Promptly report injuries, threats, harassment, confrontations, accidents, law-enforcement interactions, unsafe conditions, or other incidents.
Use organizational materials, mobile devices, vehicles, and other equipment safely and only for authorized purposes.
Follow instructions from management regarding suspension or modification of field activities due to weather, safety, or operational concerns.
Treat community members, coworkers, supervisors, partners, and members of the public with dignity and respect.
Maintain appropriate boundaries and avoid arguments, harassment, discrimination, retaliation, or disrespectful conduct.

Report to work on time and notify the supervisor promptly of an absence, delay, or scheduling concern.
Obtain approval before working outside the assigned schedule or exceeding authorized hours.
Attend required meetings, trainings, briefings, and debriefings as scheduled.
Work flexible hours, including evenings and Saturdays, as assigned.
