About The Position

The Elder Services Intern position involves providing ongoing support and expertise to older adult clients through comprehensive assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation of individual client needs. The intern will also be responsible for attending community meetings and events to learn about available resources for older adult clients and training opportunities. This role includes engaging with senior groups to understand their needs, creating seasonal educational newsletters, organizing social engagement opportunities, and involving older adults in community and program activities. Interns will organize two events per semester, learning to write proposals, engage with other organizations for locations and donations, and educate the community about Elder Services Programs. They will participate in at least 8 outreach events per term to share information about Elder Services programs. Social Work Interns will research community-based organizations to create a resource binder, which will help connect older adults to various services. Interns will also create and distribute two to three newsletters to over 2000 clients, providing updates on resources and community events. Additionally, interns will shadow other program staff, including social workers for home visits, assist with door-to-door resource distribution, help with the Housing Upgrades to Benefit Seniors intake line, and attend planning and advisory board committee meetings. By the end of the service term, the intern will gain a grasp of community-based resources, aging in place, links between housing and health, outreach strategies, program management, building rapport with clients, engaging community members, and creating proposals. Civic Works strengthens Baltimore's communities through education, skills development, and community service, with goals to Build Brighter Futures, grow Healthy Food and Green Communities, and create Safe and Affordable Housing.

Requirements

  • Members must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at a four-year college or university.
  • Preferred fields of study include: human services management, social work, health systems management, social sciences (e.g., anthropology, sociology, political science, etc.), public administration, and non-profit management.
  • Must have reliable independent transportation.
  • Must pass a background check and drug test.
  • Submission of a resume is required.

Responsibilities

  • Organize two events per semester, including writing proposals, engaging with other organizations for locations and donations, and educating the community about Elder Services Programs.
  • Participate in at least 8 outreach events per term to share information about available programs within Elder Services.
  • Conduct research on different community-based organizations and groups to create a resource binder.
  • Create and distribute two to three newsletters to over 2000 clients.
