An Electrocardiogram (EKG) Technician performs non-invasive tests to monitor a patient's heart rate and rhythm. These tests include EKG tests, stress tests, or Holter monitoring tests, depending on the technician's level of training. EKG tests use electrodes placed on the patient's chest to measure the electrical activity in his or her heart. This exciting setting provides a challenging and educational experience for technicians at Cleveland Clinic. A caregiver in this position works PRN (as needed) varying shifts from 6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Requirements

  • Six months of basic ECG training with Arrhythmia knowledge from an accredited school
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross
  • Six months of experience
  • Good hand coordination for positioning of electrodes and equipment.
  • Good vision to analyze computer screens and graph recordings to diagnose test results.
  • Adequate mathematics skills to maintain accurate records and reports.

Responsibilities

  • Record and edit EKGs, Holter monitors and pacemaker checks and assist with stress testing when applicable.
  • Perform 12-lead electrocardiograms and other noninvasive cardiology exams as ordered by the physician.
  • Perform graded exercise tests and radioisotope stress tests under the supervision of the physician when applicable.
  • Perform ambulatory monitoring procedures and event recording procedures.
  • Participate in medical emergencies in the clinic.
  • Perform pacemaker and ICD evaluations when applicable.
  • Learn how to operate new equipment and technology.
  • Maintain complete and up-to-date documentation and files at all times, including product and service quotes.
  • Interact with Patients, families, physicians and other health care workers.
  • Use good judgment in stressful emergency situations.
