About The Position

The San Diego Unified School District is seeking motivated individuals for the position of Educational Transcriber I. This is a unique hourly training opportunity designed to bridge the communication gap for hearing-impaired students. As an Educational Transcriber I, you will learn to provide real-time captioning and printed notes, ensuring every student has equitable access to their education. This role may serve as a direct pathway to permanent, benefited position(s) within the District. Please note that this position requires a specific, mandatory training period as outlined below. Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • Keyboard at a net corrected speed of 45 words per minute.
  • Demonstrate transcription skills while attending and progressing through San Diego Unified (provided) transcription training program.
  • Completion of a district-approved transcription training program is required as part of this position.
  • Related education and experience must be clearly represented in the work history and education section of your application.
  • Contact information for all previous places of employment where you served in a classified (non-certificated) position must be listed.
  • List every school district, county office of education, charter school, other educational institutions, or state special school where you have been employed, regardless of your length of service.

  • Individuals that successfully complete the District Caption Training Program, which includes on-the-job captioning experience in a school setting, may qualify to apply for regular monthly, benefited job opportunities in the position series.

Responsibilities

  • Complete district approved transcription training program, including 80 hours online training program and 80 hours shadowing trained transcribers in classrooms at various school sites.
  • Provide real-time captioning and printed notes for hearing-impaired students.
  • Learn and demonstrate growth in the use of specialized technology.
  • Operate specialized equipment including computers and related peripherals, specialized software, and print access technology.
