About The Position

The Educational Planner TRiO works with students participating in TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) and SSS STEM, federally funded programs designed to increase retention, graduation, and transfer rates of students who are low-income, first generation, and/or have a disability. The Educational Planner is responsible for academic advising, connecting students to applicable on- and off-campus resources to meet their socio-emotional needs, and maintaining consistent communication with students to assess progress toward their academic, career, and personal goals. The Educational Planner reports to the Director of TRiO and maintains collaborative relationships with staff, faculty, and college departments involved in the implementation of TRiO objectives. In collaboration with the TRiO team, the Educational Planner will work to advance the department’s commitment to diversity and equity through development, implementation, and assessment of culturally responsive policies and practices to achieve equitable outcomes for historically underrepresented students. Green River College's student body is made up of approximately 41% Academic Transfer students, 34% Professional-Technical students, 15% Adult Basic Education student, and 3% Applied Bachelor degrees. Green River College has four campuses, including the main campus in Auburn, Washington, with satellite campuses in Kent, downtown Auburn, and Enumclaw. Green River programs serve high school graduates, Running Start students (dual enrollment in local high schools and the college), those seeking retraining for the workforce, international students, students learning English, and Continuing Education students. Green River's service areas are increasingly ethnically diverse, comprising African Americans, African immigrants, Asian Americans, Asians, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Middle Eastern Americans, among other communities. Requirements

Bachelor’s degree
Ability to work effectively with students experiencing a high degree of personal and emotional stressors impacting their academics, to assess, develop, and implement supports or make referrals to appropriate resources
Experience working with under-represented populations and demonstrated commitment to enhancing equity and academic success of community college students
A clear understanding and appreciation of the training and educational opportunities, services, and resources available through the community college system.
Awareness of the complex needs of a diverse student population attending community colleges and a working knowledge of student and career development theory
Ability to effectively advise students regarding academic requirements, career preparation, and personal development
Ability to effectively collaborate within the TRiO team, and with on- and off-campus partners
Effective written and oral communication, and presentation skills with the ability to adapt to the knowledge and needs of the audience
Must be able to effectively plan and implement program activities
Must be able to work independently, manage several projects simultaneously, and keep to deadlines
Must have a working knowledge of online tools such as Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.); communication platforms (Teams, Zoom, etc.); Learning Management Systems, Customer Relationship Management software, databases, and file storage (Canvas, SharePoint, etc.)

Nice To Haves

A personal background similar to those of TRiO-eligible student participants
Experience in providing direct service to college students, preferably in a student support role
Ability to speak another language in addition to English, preferably in one of the top languages spoken in the Kent and Auburn communities: Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese, Korean, Tagalog, Somali
Master’s degree in Counseling, Education, Student Development, Social Work, or related field
Understanding of Guided Pathways initiatives and programming

Responsibilities

Manage a caseload of 120-140 students
Develop and maintain student-centered relationships with a diverse group of participants that encourages and facilitates program participation
Identify and address barriers to student success and act as a liaison, advocate and resource person for program participants
Facilitate early intervention strategies for student success, retention, and completion; including a personal plan of support services to meet the needs of each program participant
Assist students in setting academic, transfer, personal, and professional goals; and developing SMART plans to achieve these goals
Consult with Office of the Registrar, Financial Aid, and other Student Support Services to resolve admission, registration, and graduation issues
Work closely with student support departments and faculty to maintain a holistic view of progress for each student on your caseload
Maintain knowledge of Green River degree requirements and general transferability of degrees to local institutions
Assist students in the completion of financial aid and scholarship applications and refer to alternative funding sources for Green River and intended transfer institutions
Demonstrate cultural responsiveness (including an awareness and understanding of historically underserved populations) and create an educational environment that affirms commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion
Regularly participate in trainings and professional development opportunities to further knowledge and self-awareness of diversity, equity and bias
Promote a culture of belonging that advances racial, social, and economic justice in service of our diverse student communities
Establish and maintain relationships with service providers in the community in order to make appropriate referrals for students
Design and manage effective academic skill building interventions which may include peer mentoring, tutoring, study tables, etc.
Develop, implement, and coordinate group activities, workshops, and seminars to assist students in the development of academic skills, educational and career goals, and transfer to Bachelor degree programs
Co-design equity-centered learning experiences in collaboration with students, community partners, TRiO staff, and other campus departments
Plan and implement TRiO sponsored field trips to colleges, universities, industry partners, and cultural events
Serve on College committees to represent the interests of TRiO students, build and maintain professional relationships across campus, and market the TRiO program
Participate in annual planning of departmental goals, objectives, activities, and budget
Perform other duties as assigned
Identify and recruit TRiO eligible students
Develop and conduct program orientations, workshops, seminars, and campus outreach activities according to the grant objectives
Utilize a TRiO specific student database for tracking reportable grant requirements, including student participation, degree completion and transfer, student contact and progress notes, service provision and referrals, etc.
