The Educational Guidance Counselor, Correction Education with the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Muncy offers you the chance to make a real difference each day. Requirements

  • Two years of professional experience in educational guidance and educational counseling, and four years of paraprofessional experience in education, social work, or counseling; or
  • Two years of professional experience in educational guidance and educational counseling, and a bachelor's degree in the social sciences, behavioral sciences, education, social work, counseling, or a closely related field; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training, which includes one year of professional experience in educational guidance and educational counseling.
  • Valid and active Educational Specialist 1 or Educational Specialist 2 certification in the field of elementary or secondary school guidance or school counseling issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
  • Must be eligible for an Emergency Permit issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education that is appropriate to the position (if no candidates possess the named certifications).
  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
  • Must meet the PA residency requirement.
  • Must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • An employee hired based on eligibility for an Emergency Permit must obtain a valid and active Educational Specialist 1 or Educational Specialist 2 certification in the field of elementary or secondary school guidance or school counseling issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Responsibilities

  • Provide clear guidance on educational requirements and available programs
  • Interview inmates to identify goals and support career development and post education planning
  • Administer and score assessments, interpret results, and recommend appropriate class placements
  • Maintain accurate educational records and monitor student attendance and class enrollment
  • Work with educational staff to update rosters, support graduation events, and address student progress issues
  • Prepare and submit purchase requests for needed educational supplies
