About The Position

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is seeking an Educational Consultant for its East TN Project PAVE (Providing Access to the Visual Environment) initiative. This role involves supporting the development of instructional programs for individuals with disabilities, including those with developmental disabilities and autism. The consultant will create informational content such as tip sheets, video examples, and curriculum modules for caregivers, providers, and educators. Additionally, the position requires providing technical assistance and training, including web-based training and live workshops, to individuals working with autistic individuals. The role also involves developing printable resources, webinars, and communities of practice, and conducting in-service training on low vision devices and strategies for supporting students with disabilities.

Requirements

Working knowledge of recommended best practices, technologies available for low- and high-tech AT, and expected roles and responsibilities of an TVI within a school environment
Considerable knowledge of special education regulations, policies, and procedures
Experience providing consultation and training to teachers and service providers relating to visual impairments
Excellent human relations, interpersonal communications, conflict resolution, organizational and planning skills
Comprehensive knowledge of characteristics of individuals with a variety of disabilities not limited to visual impairments
Ability to work in a collaborative and cooperative manner with parents, co-workers, school staff and service providers
Valid driver's license and ability to travel within the state of Tennessee to deliver AT and train students in their native educational environment required (travel reimbursement provided)
Ability to maintain professionalism and organization among varied work environments (remote, traveling off-site, office at VEI, and VEI pediatric ophthalmology clinic)
Self-motivated individual with excellent organizational skills
Proficient in using technology, including but not limited to Microsoft Office, TEAMS, Excel and word
Skilled at maintaining accurate and well-organized records
Certified Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI)
Bachelors
At least 1 year of TVI

Responsibilities

Develop printable resources, web-based training modules, webinars and communities of practice.
Plan, prepare and conduct in-service training activities for low vision devices in the student's learning environment, community or home.
Plan, prepare and conduct in-service training activities for community service providers (e.g. school instructors and personnel, early intervention providers and agency staff) who serve students with disabilities including but not limited to autistic students. Topics can include, but are not limited to, special education learning and behavior modalities, social skills, training, behavior management, IEP development, ABA strategies and the use of visual supports.
Provides consultation to classroom teachers and service providers to help them develop appropriate goals and activities for individual students or clients as well as improve the structure and organization of their environment and design specialized programs as needed.
Participate in teamwide quality improvement activities
Travel throughout the area to provide in person trainings in schools, homes and in the community regularly
