About The Position

The Education Program Specialist supports the Education Department through all interpretive, formal and informal programming including the development and teaching of programs, toddler programs, tours, school and group programs, camps, events and training. This position will support the Education Programs Supervisor in overseeing daily programs and events, and assist with the training of part-time educators, camp counselors, volunteers and interns.

Requirements

  • Must have an appreciation for environmental education and a commitment to conservation and animal welfare.
  • Willingness to work with and around animals, including snakes and other reptiles, mammals, birds, amphibians, and invertebrates.
  • Must adhere to all safety policies and protocols and is proactive in reporting potential safety hazards.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, Adobe, and basic technologies.
  • Must provide proof of a TB test within the last 12 months or be willing to consent to obtaining one upon hire.
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, biology, environmental studies or related field required. An equivalent combination of related education and one year of experience are acceptable in lieu of a degree.
  • Experience working in an interpretive educational setting with children and adults required.
  • Experience creating educational age-appropriate content and/or curriculum required.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Valid CPR, First Aid, and AED certification, or willing to obtain within 90 days of hire required.

Nice To Haves

  • Multi-lingual a plus.
  • Experience in customer service and interacting with diverse groups of people; ages, abilities, cultures, and backgrounds preferred.
  • Experience working with or around animals, including reptiles, amphibians, mammals, birds and invertebrates preferred.
  • National Association for Interpretation Certified Interpretive Guide is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for program development including but not limited to toddler programs, school/group programs, tours, events, outreach, and behind the scenes experiences.
  • Design educational curriculum; outlining goals, objectives and stating environmental and conservation standards as necessary.
  • Coordinate and host on-site and off-site events, including but not limited to, fairs, festivals, fundraising, and partner events.
  • Lead educational programming in the absence of part-time education staff.
  • Develop and participate in routine educational program assessments, evaluations and surveys.
  • Assist in the training and oversight of volunteer staff for programs and events with support of the Education Programs Supervisor.
  • Serve as the primary program lead and assist the Education Programs Supervisor in the hiring and training of part-time education staff.
  • Train on and maintain active animal handler status and adhere to all handling and safety protocols while presenting Ambassador Animals.
  • Provide excellent customer service and communication to ensure successful programs and positive experiences for all.
  • Cross-train on all programs and support teaching in all areas of the Education Department.
