About The Position

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) is charged with implementing the state's public school laws for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade public schools at the direction of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and State Board of Education. The Primary purpose of this position will be to provide, coordinate and support the professional development in literacy for teachers and administrators of exceptional children in the Piedmont Triad & Southwest Regions. This consultant will collaborate with the consultants within the Office of Exceptional Children and regional personnel to use a data driven continuous improvement process to identify the needs of each PSU and region. This collaboration will result in coordinated research-based literacy professional development and instructional model program support and coaching for teachers of students with disabilities. Duties also include working with the Department of Public Instruction personnel on intra-agency issues affecting the delivery of quality services; working with professional, parent, and service organizations and associations to promote appropriate public education; and serving on task forces and committees to promote improved services for North Carolina public schools.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in the education field to which assigned from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of specifically related experience in public education; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Reading Research to Classroom Practice Certified Instructor.
  • Minimum of 4 years of teaching experience in Special Education.
  • Experience supervising and developing professional accounting staff.

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional development and informational sessions, including face-to-face and virtual meetings on the development and implementation of evidence-based practices in literacy.
  • Provide technical assistance to Public School Units on effective programming that significantly improves outcomes for students with disabilities in the area of reading/literacy to include creating an infrastructure for academic support, data collection systems to monitor progress, and selecting/implementing evidence-based literacy interventions.
  • Gather and analyze district and state level data collected to identify trends and areas of growth/need to determine statewide support and opportunities to scale up academic support programming.
  • Collaborate with Regional Consultants by providing information and assistance to PSUs as they implement evidence-based literacy interventions to improve outcome and compliance on the State Performance Plan and Annual Performance Report (APR).
  • Additional duties as assigned such as serving on committees within the agency, working on specific conference tasks, compiling reports for the General Assembly, and assisting with other initiatives that support students with disabilities.
