About The Position

The Education Assistant serves as the client’s main support as they integrate into the Portland Public School system. This position completes education assessments and progress reports on a regular basis and acts as a liaison for the client and school staff (counselors, teachers, etc.). They meet regularly with the youth at our program to connect them with educational resources, help with homework and share updates on their grades. They also provide offsite support to the youth in the classroom.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required
  • 1 year experience working with youth
  • Attained age 21 years or older before first day of employment in position
  • Blood borne Pathogens training is required on the first day of employment.
  • CPR/SFA obtained within 30 days of employment and kept current
  • Complete required program trainings and update as required, including a training in Crisis De-escalation and Physical Restraint Techniques
  • May work at multiple ORR Programs
  • Pass a criminal history background check though Morrison and a suitability determination investigation through the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.
  • Proof of Vaccination (MMR, Varicella, DTap & Influenza annually)

Nice To Haves

  • Bi-lingual in Spanish and English, written, read and verbal strongly preferred. Must clear a language proficiency test for Spanish.
  • Work in a classroom or educational setting
  • Hold a valid drivers’ license and if driving a personal vehicle, must maintain minimum auto insurance policy
  • Transporting clients may be required by using an agency vehicle

Responsibilities

  • Works with teachers to provide educational support and behavioral management in the classrooms.
  • Completes ongoing progress reports and uploads to the client’s electronic record
  • Completes the Education Assessment with 72 hours of the client’s admission to the program and uploads to the client’s electronic record
  • Contracts client’s previous facilities/educational institutions, etc. for transferable credits.
  • Completes a “Client Education Discharge Letter” prior to youth leaving the program.
  • Assists in group outings and field trips with the clients.
  • Completes incident reports as required. Completes documentation in a timely manner.
  • Participates in daily shift change meetings and regularly scheduled staff meetings.
  • Assists in the milieu during periods of high activity, as needed.
  • Works effectively with external representatives and/or community members to ensure cooperative and supportive working relations and coordination of client services.
  • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team (case management, clinical, education, medical, etc.).
  • Demonstrate a commitment to developing a thorough knowledge and application of the Sanctuary model and other organizational policies & practices.
  • Participate in staff development, in-services, and training related to workplace effectiveness; model professional behaviors and implement improvements to business practices with awareness of their impact in a trauma-informed behavioral healthcare organization.
  • Other duties as assigned to ensure successful operation of program/department
