About The Position

This AmeriCorps position at Hot Springs National Park will contribute to the conservation, management, public awareness, and interpretation of the park's hydrological resources. The participant will assist in developing and delivering educational programming focused on biological science and the preservation of hydrogeological resources. Key areas may include interactive geological programming about mountain-building, the Hot Springs Recharge Zone, thermophilic organisms, and designing virtual and in-class learning opportunities. Additional projects could involve cross-training with the Natural Resources Management division on hydrological research, designing fire management education programming, and assisting with public outreach at the visitor center. Specialized projects in digital education formats may also be available.

Requirements

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien.
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.
  • Prior to starting the position, agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check for the employer of record, Conservation Legacy, and a separate government security background check for the host site.
  • Must be available to participate for the entire 20 Weeks.
  • Must have a valid driver's license to drive a government vehicle.

Nice To Haves

  • Undergraduates or recent graduates whose educational background and career objectives are in environmental education.
  • Completed basic undergraduate coursework toward a degree in geology, biology, or education, or relevant field projects to related fields.
  • Comfortable in a public speaking position, including engaging with the general public or students in a k-12 setting.
  • Demonstrate the ability to conduct projects alone and in a team.
  • Abiding by professional conduct with other staff and the public at large.
  • Demonstrate a passion for educating in the urban-nature interface about the importance of watershed and recharge zone conservation.
  • Previous field experience engaging with a broad range of audiences.
  • A personal vehicle is recommended.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the delivery and development of educational programming related to biological science and preservation of hydrogeological resources.
  • Develop interactive geological programming of the Ouachita mountain-building.
  • Emphasize the science and preservation of the Hot Springs Recharge Zone.
  • Create digestible programming of the thermophilic organisms residing in the park.
  • Help design virtual and in-class learning opportunities related to park resources.
  • Cross-train with the park Natural Resources Management division on hydrological research.
  • Design fire management education programming.
  • Assist with public outreach in the visitor center.
  • Assist in immersive education programming for local k-12 students.
  • Participate in a local media outreach regarding watershed preservation.
  • Staff presentation booths for public outreach.

  • Weekly Living Allowance: $775.00 per week, fixed rate (pre-tax)
