About The Position

The PR/Communications team within the University of St. Thomas Marketing, Insights and Communications department is seeking a curious student storyteller to contribute original content to the St. Thomas Newsroom. The Editorial Fellow will report, research and write stories about the people, ideas and activities that make up the St. Thomas community. Assignments may include short features, Q&As, event coverage, Humans of St. Thomas profiles and other Newsroom content. This is an opportunity to strengthen your reporting, interviewing and writing skills while building a portfolio of published work. This position is eligible for internship credit in the second semester, in addition to hourly pay.

Requirements

  • Strong interest in writing, journalism, storytelling or communications.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Curiosity about people, ideas and the St. Thomas community.
  • Comfort interviewing and interacting with people from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines and incorporate editorial feedback.
  • Degree seeking at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels.
  • Actively enrolled at least part-time in courses for credit.

Nice To Haves

  • Journalism, communications, English and related majors are especially encouraged to apply, but strong writers from any major are welcome.
  • Previous published work is not required. Class assignments, student media work or other writing samples may be submitted.

Responsibilities

  • Pitch, develop, story ideas about St. Thomas; identify interesting people, activities and story ideas across campus regarding students, faculty, staff, alumni, programs and events.
  • Report and write Humans of St. Thomas profiles, Newsletter descriptions, short features and other Newsroom stories.
  • Conduct interviews, background research and fact-checking.
  • Review interview transcripts and assist with In the News as needed.
  • Work with editors to revise stories for accuracy, clarity and audience.
