About The Position

Penguin Random House is seeking an Editor or Senior Editor for the BFYR imprint at Random House Children's Books, focusing on picture books. The role involves acquiring and developing picture books and young formats for ages 0-7, targeting mass-market and retail distribution. The ideal candidate will have a retail-minded viewpoint, a successful commercial picture book track record, established relationships, and a passion for illustrated formats. This position offers the opportunity to establish new series, grow existing brands, and potentially work on IP and franchise development. The role is supported by a collaborative and innovative team, with a focus on creating books that kids adore and see themselves in.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of children's books editorial experience.
  • Proven track record for acquiring and editing successful picture books and young illustrated work.
  • Excellent writing and copywriting skills.
  • Ability to think creatively and develop ideas for expanding children's book characters and worlds.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with authors, illustrators, agents, and internal teams (Editorial, Design, Sales, Marketing).
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work to multiple deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Teams.
  • Comfortable working in a virtual environment.
  • Spanish language fluency is a plus, but not a necessity.

Nice To Haves

  • Established relationships within the children's book industry.
  • Experience with IP work and franchising successful brands into Early Readers.
  • Experience with AI as an administrative tool with guardrails.

Responsibilities

  • Edit approximately 10-15 new books per year, identifying some through new and creative avenues.
  • Oversee all editorial aspects of book development, including manuscript generation and acquisition.
  • Liaise with art directors to provide illustration direction.
  • Write copy including cover, metadata, and other marketing copy as required.
  • Generate book ideas for preschool and early elementary ages through market analysis and identifying gaps in the market.
  • Maintain publishing/production schedules and meet deadlines while collaborating with multiple teams.
  • Participate in brainstorms and editorial meetings.
  • Present titles at sales meetings and across the division.
  • Keep abreast of retail trends, self-publishing trends, and children’s media/interests to stay updated on marketplace demands by reading trade publications, competitor books, visiting bookstores, and watching children's media.
