About The Position

Editors-in-chief work together to make decisions about matters that impact the whole of Student Media. Student Media is a student-run entity that will hire editors-in-chief for four publications: Bod Magazine, Kaw Yearbook, Washburn Review newspaper, and Washburn Review website. Requirements

  • Must have an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Must be a full time student enrolled at Washburn University
  • Previous Student Media experience or other relevant media experience.
  • Basic knowledge of computers.

Responsibilities

  • EICs are responsible for the overall management of The Review, Bod Magazine or Kaw Yearbook or maintaining the website.
  • Hire, train and manage a staff of associate or assistant-level editors and staff members.
  • Make decisions concerning the publication of all content.
  • Write reports as requested for the Board of Student Media. Accept or reject advertising.
  • Conduct weekly editorial meetings and maintain editorial policies.
  • Supervise design and page layout.
  • Determine the size of publications in consultation with the advertising manager, business manager and director of Student Media.
  • Establish and enforce all deadlines necessary for publication.
  • Establish a training structure for all staff positions.
  • Work with the business manager and director to develop an annual fiscal budget.
  • Maintain a recruiting program.
  • Change messages on the voicemail system, check messages and ensure that the messages receive a timely response.
  • Coordinate with other editors-in-chief to ensure joint staff meetings once a month.
  • Hire and dismiss, with the Board of Student Media approval, staff members not hired by the Board of Student Media.
  • Write or assign a weekly editorial board piece.
  • Write a weekly column.
  • Attend and report to the Board of Student Media at regularly scheduled meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Board of Student Media.
