About The Position

The New York Times is seeking journalists who want to build editing careers through its two-year Editing Residency program. This program offers participants the chance to develop and hone their news editing skills while working on Times journalism. The program aims to train the next generation of editors for the broader industry. Participants will work on all types of journalism, including breaking news, enterprise stories, visual stories, and special projects, requiring the ability to pivot quickly on deadline. The Times is looking for candidates who are curious, collaborative, committed to excellence, possess excellent news judgment, a sharp eye for detail, and an interest in learning about a broad array of topics. Candidates should also have the ability to frame articles, write display copy, and develop trusting relationships with reporters and fellow editors. While there is no guarantee of a full-time position upon completion, the program will offer support in the search for such opportunities.

Requirements

  • At least two years of professional journalism experience outside of school publications and internships.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States. We will not sponsor work visas for the residency.
  • Excellent news judgment
  • Sharp eye for detail
  • Ability to frame articles and write sparkling display copy
  • Experience developing trusting relationships with reporters and fellow editors
  • Solid news judgment, and a firm grasp of grammar and fact-checking
  • Professional experience editing and assigning news articles

Nice To Haves

  • At least some prior editing experience.

Responsibilities

  • Edit articles from desks across the newsroom, including breaking news and features
  • Participate in training seminars designed for the residency, and receive regular feedback
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the newsroom on different stories and story forms
