About The Position

The Unit Secretary is a non-licensed person who performs clerical unit tasks as requested. This role involves preparing medical records for various patient transitions, handling telephone communications with professionalism and confidentiality, and performing general clerical duties. The position requires supporting the Medical Center's mission and vision, maintaining regular attendance, and potentially serving as a sitter after completing designated training. The shift requirement is three 12-hour shifts per week, from 10:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current AHA or Red Cross BLS certification required.
  • Good verbal communication is a must.
  • Must be self-motivated and have the ability to work within the established policies, procedures and practices prescribed by the hospital/clinic.
  • Must be able to sit and stand, intermittent 8 to 12 hours a day.
  • Must be able to use standard office equipment, including the telephone and computer keyboard.
  • Continuously works under pressure of near 100% accuracy while meeting inflexible deadlines.
  • Continuously utilizes manual/bi-manual dexterity, near vision, speech, and hearing.
  • Frequently stands, walks, sits and utilizes eye/hand coordination and color definition.
  • Occasionally reaches above shoulder, regularly required to lift and/or carry up to 35 lbs.
  • Occasionally walks on uneven surfaces.

Nice To Haves

  • 6 months of healthcare experience preferred.
  • Previous experience in clerical tasks desired.
  • Experience in computers is desired.
  • Medical Terminology is an asset but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare medical records for discharge, admissions, and transfers.
  • Able to communicate information verbally and via messages in writing.
  • Handle telephone communication with courtesy, accuracy, and respect for confidentiality.
  • Perform clerical duties as requested.
  • Possess a working knowledge of policies.
  • Handle inquiries from the public as needed.
  • Assist co-workers as needed/ requested.
  • Maintain an effective rapport with all customers.
  • Support the Medical Center’s Mission/Vision/ philosophy positively.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • Expected to serve as sitters as needed, following the successful completion of designated sitter education and training provided.
  • Perform other essential duties as assigned.
