About The Position

This position assists the Emergency Physicians and Nurses in providing care to the emergency department patients as a vital member of the care team. Patient population ranges from infancy to geriatrics.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic certificate program with an active license highly preferred
  • At least 1 year experience as an EMT or EMT-P desired

Responsibilities

  • Obtains vital sign readings on all age patients and documents in per policy.
  • Has knowledge to identify abnormal vitals based on patient age and reports to the RN and/or physician.
  • Able to respond to emergent patient care scenarios in a calm and organized manner.
  • Can apply basic life support skills to patients as applicable as a member of the care team.
  • Maintains operational knowledge of emergency department equipment such as cardiac monitors, splinting and suturing supplies, EKG machines, oxygen supplies, suction equipment and set up of sterile supplies for interventions.
  • Participates in ongoing education regarding equipment and supplies.
  • Participates in the organization and management of supplies in the department to maintain necessary stock and cleanliness of the environment.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population.
  • Provides appropriate, age specific treatment as directed.
  • Prepares rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment.
  • Performs direct patient care as a member of the emergency department team. Such care to include performing EKGs and applying cardiac monitors, splinting, wound care, hygiene care, patient transport, preparation for procedures, glucometer checks, obtaining and documenting vital signs.
  • Phlebotomy for venous samples after satisfactory completion of hospital assigned course.
  • Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Prepares and maintains written documentation as required by the profession and the department.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of error, reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions, identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.
