About The Position

Specialists in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Mayo Clinic Phoenix treat a variety of life-threatening illnesses. We are a Magnet accredited hospital that is also a Comprehensive Stroke Center with the availability of a Cath Lab 24/7. Staffed by board-certified physicians, registered nurses, Emergency Medical Technicians, dedicated ED pharmacists, RN case managers and social workers, and other specially trained staff, that are accessible to treat anyone seeking emergency care. Mayo Clinic Arizona’s Emergency Department treats a growing number of patients each year. As the surrounding communities continue to expand, the department is outfitted with advanced, innovative patient‑care equipment that empowers staff to deliver the highest quality of care. The department features a 56-bed emergency department equipped with: 4 major medical rooms, 4 mental health rooms with garage doors for patient safety, one highly infectious room, Safe Baby Haven, a large staff breakroom with an attached patio, and a modern and clean design with natural light.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum one year of patient care experience required.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Works flexible hours that may include days, evenings, nights, holidays and weekends.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to unpredictable situation within the patient care setting.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required upon hire and must be valid for 90 days or greater from start date.
  • Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) competency.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification through the Arizona Department of Health Services required.

Nice To Haves

  • 1 year ED experience preferred.
  • Previous emergency department patient care experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with delegated tasks of direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Assists with orthopedic procedures as delegated by Orthopedic/Emergency Department physicians, RN Team Lead and other health team members.
  • Performs vital sign assessment and documentation.
  • Performs triage assessment and documentation under the direct supervisor of a RN.
  • Completes 12 EKGs.
  • Applies orthopedic devices to include traction and OCL splints.
  • Provides patient education with regards to the application of orthopedic devices, crutch walking, etc.
  • Assists with wound care, ENT, orthopedic procedures, eye/ear irrigations, suture/staple removal, foley leg bag application, c-spine immobilization and bladder scanning.
  • Provides assistance in the evolution and maintenance of supplies pertaining to the Emergency Department.
  • Assists with orientation, training and quality assurance activities for the Emergency Department.
  • Communicates data reflective of the patient's status, delegated tasks and/or functions.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development of the life span and appropriately interprets information relative to the patient's age-specific needs.
