About The Position

This is a part-time, dual role as an Emergency Department (ED) Technician and Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) for a weekend program. The position involves performing direct patient care as directed by nursing and medical staff, ensuring adequate supplies and equipment are available, assisting with customer service initiatives, maintaining competencies, and collaborating with peers for coverage. The role also requires basic knowledge of clerical functions to assist with HUC coverage when necessary. The schedule is every Saturday and Sunday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with one weekend off per quarter. Holiday rotation includes working 2-3 holidays per year.

Requirements

  • 2-3 years of hospital patient care or pre-hospital patient care experience OR completion of 1 year of nursing school clinical rotations OR Certified Nursing Assistant.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Ability to use keyboard and see computer screen.
  • Ability to move/lift patients and push carts.
  • Completion of age-specific competency.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance.
  • Willingness to use patient handling equipment for lifts over 35 pounds or when patient cannot assist, with at least one other associate.
  • Ability to assess unique patient lifting/movement situations on a case-by-case basis.

Nice To Haves

  • EMT-Ps licensed by IDPH may complete the housewide competency to start IVs, saline locks, and administer IV fluids.

Responsibilities

  • Perform direct patient care as directed by nursing and medical staff, including starting IVs (for EMT-Ps), assisting with invasive procedures, applying bedside monitors, performing EKGs, phlebotomy, orthopedic post molds and splints, crutch training, monitoring and discontinuing urinary catheters, and assisting patients with ADLs and toileting.
  • Document all interventions in the electronic medical record.
  • Assist with the application of hard and soft restraints and monitor behavioral health patients.
  • Immediately report concerns regarding patient status to nursing and medical staff.
  • Ensure adequate medical supplies and equipment are available and maintained throughout the shift, including checking levels, communicating needs, and performing gross cleaning of used sterile instruments.
  • Transport instruments and trays to Sterile Processing for cleaning.
  • Clean flexible scopes and fiberoptic laryngoscope blades according to policy.
  • Monitor equipment function and report/remove malfunctions, arranging for repairs if appropriate.
  • Ensure cleanliness and organization of equipment and supplies in all patient care areas.
  • Assist nursing and medical staff to maintain high customer service performance in the ED.
  • Complete patient rounds hourly, managing patient expectations using AIDET and reporting concerns.
  • Make rounds on patients in the ED waiting room.
  • Deliver high-quality patient care in accordance with ED quality initiatives.
  • Maintain annual competencies in compliance with applicable policy and procedure.
  • Collaborate with peers to ensure adequate coverage in the ED throughout the shift, including during meals and breaks.
  • Maintain basic knowledge of clerical functions such as telephone and basic order entry to assist with HUC coverage.
  • Regularly communicate with the ED Charge Nurse and fellow ED Techs to meet patient care needs.
  • Transport patients, supplies, and equipment interdepartmentally when necessary.
  • Transport blood products, medications, x-rays, and medical supplies as needed.
