About The Position

The Emergency Department Technician performs direct patient care activities under the direction of a Registered Nurse or Physician in the Emergency Department within his/her scope of practice. Effective communication and the ability to work with diverse populations are critical.

Requirements

American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
Organization approved workplace violence training required or obtained by the last day of the month after 90 day grace period.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Able to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach and stretch frequently.
May be required to lift up to 75 lbs.
Must use standard precautions due to threat of exposure to blood and bodily fluids.
Needs the ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and speaking in person or on the telephone.
Requires significant use of computer, phone and general office equipment.

Nice To Haves

EMT Basic certification, recent Emergency Department Technician, current certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant 2 in the State of Oregon, completion of second term Nursing Curriculum, or paramedic experience (within the last two years) preferred.
Recent (within past two years) hospital experience preferred.
Phlebotomy experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Promotes positive customer relations with internal and external customers.
Completes assigned tasks in a timely manner.
Provides support to ED providers and/or private physician with procedures and treatments as requested.
Coordinates patient care with professional support staff.
Performs delegated patient care tasks as assigned by the RN and physician.
Monitors patient vital signs and notifies the RN or physician if they change.
Prepares wounds for suturing.
Applies dressings when directed by professional staff.
Measures and applies OrthoGlass Splints, utilizes OrthoGlass references manual.
Starts IVs and obtains blood work as directed by an RN or ED provider.
Performs phlebotomy tasks.
Performs waived point of care testing as ordered.
Performs 12 lead EKG.
Transports patients to assigned units as appropriate.
Assists patients at the time of discharge from the department, whether patient is being admitted to a floor or discharge for release.
Ensures the department is neat and well stocked.
Upon patient release from the department, assists with cleaning the room by wiping the bed down, changing linens, emptying the trash, straightening furniture, and stocking the room with necessary supplies/equipment.
Participates in continuing education and other appropriate learning experiences to maintain professional competence.
Attends a minimum of 75% of the department staff meetings.
Participates in achievement of the facility, department, personal and professional objectives.
Participates in performance improvement activities to improve care, processes, and customer service excellence.
Other duties as assigned.
