This role is within the Emergency Department and involves collecting, labeling, and transporting patient specimens for testing in a timely manner, including routine and advanced venipuncture. The technician will uphold organizational values by providing exemplary customer service throughout the pre-analytical and analytical processes. Responsibilities include initiating intervention on unacceptable specimens, adhering to strict patient identification protocols, collecting blood samples by performing venipunctures as ordered, and processing emergency orders (STATS and Timed Studies) within the required timeframe. The technician will accurately label specimens, operate departmental computer programs for order management, reconcile outstanding test orders, and practice universal precautions and infection control. They will also maintain supply stock, perform preventive maintenance on equipment, and troubleshoot issues with specimen registration, collection, or processing. Additional duties may include specimen processing, assuming coordinator responsibilities in the absence of supervisory staff, documenting and escalating issues, performing basic clerical duties, and assisting in training new staff or students. For clinic-based roles, duties may include reviewing test requisitions, providing instructions for non-blood specimen collections, maintaining standing order files, preparing and triaging specimens, and obtaining Medicare waivers. For hospital-based roles, duties include maintaining computerized WOW carts, adhering to patient isolation procedures, maintaining phone availability for emergent collections, and interacting with clinical staff to maintain computerized records and resolve issues.
