The ED Paramedic is responsible for administering prompt and efficient hospital care to the patient at an Advanced Life Support level. Provides care in the evaluation, treatment of patients operating via in person medical direction and standing orders (protocols) approved by the hospital. Ensures optimal patient care and a positive patient experience. Under the direction/supervisor of a physician, performs patient assessment: Performs triage to avoid delay in patient care. Utilizes clinical judgment and reports changes in patient status to designated physician. Obtains vital signs and identifies abnormal values based on age and development. Establishes priorities of care. Ensures the use of the patient identifiers and appropriately adheres to the specimen labeling policy established. Documents patient related activities after approval by physician. Performs blood draw and point of care testing on blood and urine as established by the ED approved standing orders. Ensures abnormal findings are reported directly to the nurse in charge and documented in the medical record. Assures patient throughput initiatives are followed and infection control is maintained: Applies the needed skills to clean and disinfect all equipment used based on established infection control policies. Recognizes potential hazards and takes appropriate action to ensure competent care is delivered. Safely and properly disposes of all sharps to ensure the safety of the patients and bystanders. Communicates, conditions of patient/family to responsible registered nurse, charge nurse or physician: Functions as a team member and performs other related duties as assigned. Accompanies and assist in transportation of patients to other diagnostic or treatment areas within the hospital. Functions as a resource for unit personnel. Coordinates tasks with appropriate personnel. Provides educational experiences for EMT students as assigned. Observe the rights and dignity of each patient and family. Maintains patient safety: Assumes responsibility in completing appropriate patient care charges. Shares in the improvement in quality of patient care through participation on committees and by contributing suggestions for improvement in the organized delivery of patient care. Continues professional growth by identification of personal needs for continuing education, setting goals and planning course of action.
