About The Position

An Emergency Medicine Nurse Practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice provider specializing in the rapid assessment, stabilization, diagnosis, and management of patients presenting to the Emergency Department with undifferentiated, urgent, or emergent illnesses and injuries. Working collaboratively with sponsor physician(s) and the multidisciplinary healthcare team, the Emergency Medicine NP provides advanced nursing care across the continuum of care for a wide variety of trauma symptoms. The Emergency Medicine NP plays a critical role in improving patient outcomes related to minor conditions to high-acuity, life-threatening crises care in the Emergency Department.

Requirements

  • Academic preparation and degree as Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner or Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner with current or eligibility to obtain licensure in state of AL
  • Academic preparation and certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
  • BCLS certification
  • ACLS certification
  • Maintains current Alabama licensure.
  • Maintains current any certifications obtained.
  • Ability to rapidly synthesize complex clinical information, rule out emergent life threats, and initiate treatment under high-pressure, time-sensitive constraints.
  • Proficiency in performing necessary invasive and non-invasive procedures common to the emergency setting.
  • Possesses a strong foundation in evidence based practice and education and accepts the responsibility for providing an environment of safe quality care.
  • Knowledge across all major body systems and age groups (pediatrics to geriatrics) concerning trauma, medical emergencies, toxicology, and environmental injuries.
  • Demonstrates an advanced level of medical and nursing knowledge, clinical and technical competence, sound clinical judgment and professionalism as it relates to interpersonal and general communication skills
  • Accepts accountability for his/her own work and team outcomes when appropriate.
  • Reports promptly any critical or unusual situations.
  • Demonstrates ability to work with patients, families, visitors, and co-workers regardless of race, gender, disease process, life-style, religious or cultural beliefs.
  • Works as a liaison for the patient to gain access to providers, case management, and dietary consults.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent ability to communicate clearly and calmly with patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team during chaotic or high-stress situations
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and ability to select appropriate guidelines for the following age groups: Neonate 0-28 days, Infant 28 days to 1 year, Pediatric 1-12 years, Adolescent 12-18 years, Adult 19-65 years, and Geriatric 65 years and older.
  • Practices effective stress reduction techniques.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the computer based medical record.
  • Demonstrates responsibility for educational requirements as evidenced by reading all assigned related references, and attending all required educational meetings, or webinars, and completing annual Symplr requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Quickly and accurately assesses patients presenting with a wide variety of symptoms to determine the severity and urgency of their condition
  • Orders, performs, and interprets diagnostic and screening tests, such as EKGs, lab work, and imaging studies to establish definitive treatment plans for acute illnesses, trauma, and injuries.
  • Diagnoses, treats, and manages the health care needs of patients, referring to physicians when medically appropriate.
  • Performs necessary procedures, including suturing, incision and drainage (I&D), splinting, conscious sedation, and managing basic airway support (depending on credentialing and scope) to stabilize patients.
  • Consults and collaborates with sponsor physician(s), nurses, and other specialists to ensure coordinated and holistic patient care.
  • Reports promptly any critical or unusual situations.
  • Determines the appropriate disposition for patients, including admission to the hospital, transfer to a higher level of care, or safe discharge with clear follow-up instructions.
  • Coordinates follow-up care and referrals.
  • Compiles and evaluate medical history, physical findings and diagnostic data to include but not limited to radiographic, laboratory, ultrasound, EKG, EEG, CT and nuclear scans, MRI and MRA studies on all patients to formulate accurate diagnoses
  • Monitors medications and initiates appropriate therapies and alters medications according to variations in a patient's response within established protocols.
  • Provides and documents patient education regarding treatments, medications, and community resources.
  • Promotes health, disease prevention, and management strategies.
  • Coordinates the implementation and continuity of medical treatment through activities such as home/hospital findings and other resources.
  • Participates in the orientation and staff development programs for personnel assisting with patient care.
  • Performs other duties as requested by primary manager that do not compromise moral code of conduct or protocols set in place for patient or employee safety
