About The Position

The Ed Fehnel Horticulture Fellowship is a 16-week, rotational, educational program providing horticultural skills. Rotations include time with all Horticulturists, the Tom and Nora Hiatt Director of Horticulture, Curator of Herbaceous Plants and Seasonal Displays, Associate Curator of Living Collections, Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park staff, and Madeline F. Elder Greenhouse staff. Students will interact with volunteers regularly as a part of their summer, and spend time learning from a wide array of gardeners. Students will spend their days shadowing or performing work for their assigned staff member. Some light weekend duties may also be included based on need. Local field trips will be taken throughout the program including the Indianapolis Zoo, Holiday Park, Crown Hill Cemetery, among others. This position culminates with a season-long project, producing a tour using the living collection of Newfields.

Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods of time in all weather conditions
  • The drive to learn new skills and stretch comfort zones
  • Willingness to drive landscape equipment and machinery

Responsibilities

  • Rotate among horticulture staff weekly
  • Assist in the planting and maintenance of diverse garden areas
  • Complete a summer project culminating in a tour for staff throughout the garden
  • Learn meaningful, translatable skills to take to future positions
