About The Position

This position requires a Registered Nurse with specialized knowledge and skills in psychiatric nursing and physical assessment, particularly in the context of Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT). The role involves providing nursing care during the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative phases of ECT, requiring strong analytical and communication abilities. The nurse will interact extensively with patients, families, and healthcare professionals, often in high-stress situations involving severely ill psychiatric patients.

Requirements

• Two years of college education in nursing.
• Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland.
• One to two years' inpatient psychiatric nursing experience, including regular practice of physical assessment skills.
• Demonstrated teaching skills.
• Relatively high level of analytical abilities sufficient to identify nursing care problems.
• Interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients, staff, other departments and disciplines, families, and physicians (51-80% of work time).
• Ability to work with severely ill psychiatric patients, frequently producing a high level of stress and mental fatigue (51-80% of work time).
• Ability to utilize talking, hearing, mid-range vision and field of vision.

Responsibilities

• Provide nursing care during the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative phases of ECT.
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Perform psychiatric nursing and physical assessment skills.
• Identify nursing care problems arising during a prescribed course of ECT.
• Interact effectively with patients, staff, other departments and disciplines, families, and physicians (51-80% of work time).
• Work with severely ill psychiatric patients, managing high levels of stress and mental fatigue (51-80% of work time).
• Utilize talking, hearing, mid-range vision, and field of vision.
