About The Position

The Internship is an 11-week paid program during the summer of 2027 for undergraduate students graduating between December 2027 and August 2028. This internship is designed to prepare associates for a career with the Walmart Economics team. Interns will work on meaningful projects, network with industry experts, and develop their skills. As a part of the Fortune One company, Walmart operates at a massive scale, necessitating sophisticated analysis. The Walmart Economics team applies academic insights and methods to drive Walmart's decision-making and transformation. Economists on the team collaborate with the Chief Economist on projects related to pricing optimization, membership and subscription growth, sustainability initiatives, and marketplace development. Interns are fully integrated into the team, working on short-term versions or components of full-time projects. They will partner with business and tech teams at the Home Office, utilizing economic tools to understand the causal impact of decisions, optimize trade-offs, and drive strategy based on first principles. This role offers the opportunity to work on projects with real-world impact while gaining experience at one of the world's largest companies.

Requirements

  • Must be actively enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program.
  • Expected graduation date between December 2027 - August 2028.
  • Experience with analyzing large datasets (ideally coding in SQL, R, or Python) is a plus.
  • Passion for economics or experience assisting with academic research.
  • Curious and a self-starter, naturally interested in learning more.
  • Collaborative and uplifts team members when partnering.
  • Enjoys hard problems.
  • Knowledge of experimentation and causal inference methods.
  • A successful candidate will not require sponsorship from Walmart for authorization to work now or in the future.

Responsibilities

  • Designing and analyzing experiments to guide decision-making by ensuring an understanding of the impact of potential changes through careful experimentation.
  • Performing causal inference by leveraging econometrics and statistics to understand the effect of changes that cannot be run experimentally.
  • Framing and evaluating trade-offs by defining and weighing business trade-offs to drive strategic decisions under uncertainty.
  • Applying behavioral economics to inform user experience design.
