About The Position

This Ecology Assistant is an AmeriCorps position hosted by the National Park Service’s Natural Resources, Stewardship & Science (NRSS) Directorate. The position contributes to servicewide and park-level efforts to respond to changing environmental conditions within the NPS. It offers developmental opportunities to gain knowledge, skills, and experience, potentially leading to future employment. NRSS staff will serve as mentors for the participant.

Requirements

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien.
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.
  • Prior to starting the position, agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check for the employer of record, Conservation Legacy, and a separate government security background check for the host site.
  • Must be available to participate for the entire 52 Weeks.

Nice To Haves

  • Upper level undergraduate or graduate student with coursework in the environmental sciences, ecology, and natural resource management.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to complete projects independently and with a team.
  • Applied knowledge of national parks, impacts of weather and global change, adaptation, and related issues.
  • Strong proficiency in writing for interdisciplinary audiences.
  • Coursework and/or experience in global change science and adaptation.
  • Coursework and/or experience in science communications.
  • Coursework and/or experience in data analysis.
  • Coursework and/or experience in ecological modeling.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the NPS Natural Resources, Stewardship & Science (NRSS) Directorate on the Ecological Scenarios Project.
  • Use existing information about changing park conditions to develop ecological scenarios for park managers.
  • Research, compile, and evaluate existing methods and tools for creating ecological scenarios based on potential future park conditions.
  • Describe case studies of projects that have used various methods and tools to create ecological scenarios.
  • Facilitate collaboration with one or more parks to apply methods/tools for creating ecological scenarios.
  • Develop best practices and examples for creating and communicating ecological scenarios to aid decision-making and education.
  • Produce NPS-focused products for the Ecological Scenarios Project (to be negotiated).
  • Produce a journal article or NPS report.
  • Maintain well-organized files documenting focus on all tasks and the development of deliverables.
  • Participate in professional growth and development opportunities, including identifying and reserving time for learning opportunities.
  • Assist with miscellaneous NRSS projects as education, skills, and experience allow on an as-needed basis.

  • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award: $7,395.00 upon successful completion of position (pre-tax)
  • Weekly Living Allowance: $775.00 per week, fixed rate (pre-tax)
