The Wilds offers ecology apprenticeships for early-career professionals at its nearly 10,000-acre conservation center, which includes reclaimed mineland, remnant forest, restoration sites, and specialized conservation facilities. Apprentices choose a focus of restoration or wildlife research and receive hands-on field training. Potential training areas include field methods, species identification, survey protocols, research methodology, laboratory methods, genetic techniques, microscopy, GPS and GIS applications, biological monitoring, wildlife research techniques, land management, and restoration techniques. Each apprentice conducts an independent scientific research project selected from an approved list and presents findings to Wilds and Columbus Zoo employees at the end of the apprenticeship. Apprentices may also take part in other projects or learning activities as time allows, with guidance on prioritizing their work. The program provides structured training, close supervision, and feedback; apprentice work complements rather than replaces paid staff work. The experience is intended to support professional development and prepare participants for conservation careers, graduate school, or work in a conservation organization. School credit may be available. For 2027, The Wilds offers three six-month apprenticeships from May through October and three summer apprenticeships from May through July. Applicants should specify whether they prefer the wildlife or restoration focus and which timeline they are applying for. Applications are accepted October 1 through January 31 and reviewed in February and March. Apprentices receive no monetary compensation and are responsible for their expenses, transportation, and health and driving insurance. On-site shared housing is available for $250 per month, including utilities, internet, and laundry facilities.
