About The Position

Fairview is hiring an ECMO Specialist to join our team at our University of Minnesota Medical Center - East Bank location in Minneapolis, MN. The ECMO Specialist is responsible for all aspects of ECMO and mechanical circulatory support, including assembling, priming, monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting ECMO equipment and circuits throughout the duration of patient support. Working in close partnership with bedside nurses and internally credentialed ECMO providers, the ECMO Specialist ensures optimal oxygenation, perfusion, acid-base balance, and hemodynamic stability in accordance with ordered parameters. This role requires expert-level clinical judgment, strong technical skills, and the ability to anticipate and manage emergent situations while adhering to established policies and procedures. The ECMO Specialist also supports quality improvement initiatives by collecting and reviewing internal and external data to benchmark performance and promote best practices.

Requirements

  • Nurse Track: Bachelor’s in Nursing (BSN) OR Respiratory Therapist Track: Graduate from a CoARC or JCRTE approved program in Respiratory Therapy and a Bachelor’s Degree.
  • 3 years critical care experience
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Nurse Track: Minnesota RN License OR Respiratory Therapist Track: Respiratory Therapist License issued by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice and Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)

Nice To Haves

  • 5 years critical care experience
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification

Responsibilities

  • Providing Mechanical Circulatory and Extracorporeal Life Support to patients of all ages
  • Practicing at the level of an expert practitioner in nursing or respiratory care
  • Assembling, monitoring, and conducting assessment of all extracorporeal life support equipment, circuitry, and adjunct therapies used (ie: ultrafiltration, continues A-V hemodialysis, etc.)
  • Participating in the evaluation of new equipment and implementation of new technology
  • Mentoring and participating in the training of new ECMO Specialists and ECMO trained nurses
  • Collaborating with the physician and healthcare team in the delivery of patient care
  • Communicating effectively with all health care team members
  • Providing excellent customer service by listening and understanding customer needs
