The ECMO Coordinator applies scientific knowledge and specialized training to clinical problems related to mechanical circulatory support devices. The role provides continuous bedside monitoring and troubleshooting, maintains equipment, and ensures uninterrupted support for critically ill patients. Services are provided in adult, pediatric, and neonatal areas. The MCS/ECMO department supports pre- and post-transplant heart and lung patients, as well as patients with cardiac arrest, pulmonary illness, and congenital heart defects. New team members typically attend week-long classroom sessions covering ECMO equipment, physiology, and hands-on water drills. This full-time position is scheduled for 36 hours per week, with 12-hour shifts from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Days are variable, and the role works every weekend. The weekend schedule policy requires working 48 of 52 weekends per calendar year. Eligible coordinators receive an additional $10 per hour for weekend shifts, in addition to base pay; the stipend can be combined with shift differentials and other special codes. Team members may request up to 48 hours of PTO on weekend shifts and exchange up to 48 hours of weekend shifts for weekday shifts, subject to unit guidelines, PTO allotment, and peak-time considerations. They may request one weekend holiday off per calendar year. A holiday is worked only if it falls on the weekend; team members are not moved from a weekend shift to work a holiday. The department is comprised of approximately 30 RN and RT staff, with experience from neonatal, pediatric, and adult cardiothoracic intensive care units. The posting describes the primary location as Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
