About The Position

The Lead Echocardiographer will perform diagnostic ultrasound evaluations of the heart using "M” Mode and 2 D imaging as well as pulse wave, continuous wave and color flow doppler. Will be able to identify the anatomy of the heart using ultrasound techniques. Under the immediate direction of the ECHO/EKG Supervisor, and within established hospital and department policies and procedures, operates diagnostic ultrasound equipment. This role also involves functioning in the role of the ECHO/EKG/EEG supervisor in their absence, assisting with leadership duties, and serving as the primary preceptor for new employees within the echo department. The position also assists in identifying gaps in practice of echo techs and provides education to echo staff to improve quality of scans, and participates in quality improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS)
  • Five or more years of clinical experience in the field of Echocardiography required
  • One of those years performing structural heart procedures
  • One year performing pediatric echocardiography
  • BLS certification through the American Heart Association for Healthcare Providers
  • Annual Joint Commission mandatory education requirements, in-service and health requirements including attendance at new employee orientation
  • TB/PPD Surveillance Program
  • Maintenance of required professional licensing and/or certification(s)

Nice To Haves

  • One year of supervisory experience in the field of Echocardiography preferred
  • Certification in Pediatric ECHO preferred
  • Associate's degree
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred

Responsibilities

  • Functions in the role of the ECHO/EKG/EEG supervisor in their absence
  • Assists the ECHO/EKG/EEG supervisor with leadership duties
  • Functions as the primary preceptor for new employees within the echo department
  • Assists in identifying gaps in practice of echo techs and provides education to echo staff to improve quality of scans
  • Participates in quality improve initiatives
  • Scans patients in all aspects of cardiac scanning including M-Mode, 2-D, color, Doppler, exercise testing and TEE
  • Ability to assist in structural heart TEE and 3D TEE understanding the possible hemodynamic changes of procedures and responding accordingly
  • During TEEs, assists providers obtaining the views needed and suggesting alternative ideas and approaches making sure all needed information is acquired
  • Inform interpreting physician if an abnormal finding and/or a hemodynamically significant change is present from previous examination
  • Performs pediatric echos and interprets findings for the preliminary report
  • The Echocardiographer will prep for cardiac stress tests, Transesophageal Echocardiograms (TEE), contrast studies, and bubble studies
  • Enters patient demographics, verifies order to undertake exam, performs echo study based on patients medical history
  • Processes CDs as requested
  • Trains others in the use of and uses of the CPACS System
  • Assists in scheduling patients
  • Interviews patients in order to obtain information pertinent to exam
  • The Echocardiographer will be able to maintain all paperwork for the Echo Department
  • The Echocardiographer should have or develop a good working knowledge of all the other procedures in the Cardiology Department for example EKG's, Holter hookups and scanning
  • Ability to interpret findings for preliminary reporting
  • Maintains echo equipment in good working condition and assures echo labs are clean; reports malfunctions of equipment to supervisor as needed
  • Must be able and willing to wear lead protection when needed
  • Understands and enforces hospital and personnel policies and procedures
  • Serve on hospital and Patient Care Services committees, teams, and work groups as requested
  • Assumes call responsibilities as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned
