About The Position

Under supervision, this role assists the lead teacher with instructional activities to provide learning experiences to individual and small groups of students. The position involves integrating Muckleshoot language and culture in the classroom, participating in school meetings and conferences, and supervising students in various educational settings. The assistant will use positive reinforcement strategies to help students develop appropriate behavior and an appreciation for diversity. Responsibilities also include preparing instructional materials, maintaining records, managing inventory, and potentially transporting students. The role requires good judgment in assisting students who are injured or ill and maintaining a positive learning environment. Specific duties related to student transportation include loading/unloading, securing students, and completing transportation records. Employees may be expected to perform a wide range of duties beyond their regular responsibilities due to the Tribe's commitment to community service.

Requirements

  • Early Childhood Education Certificate or A Child Development (CDA) credential (Tribal members only: must be willing to obtain within 1 year of employment).
  • One (1) year of professional experience working with children in preschool, daycare, or similar setting.
  • Must pass a criminal background check, a drug screen and meet all health and immunization requirements.
  • Must be able to obtain satisfactory results on a pre-employment physical examination, including tuberculosis screening.
  • Skill in effective communication with students, parents, or guardians, staff and administrators.
  • Skill in working with children in an understanding, patient, receptive and confident manner.
  • Skill in organizing activities in keeping with the maturity and attention span of assigned students.
  • Skill in following written and oral instructions.
  • Skill in managing student behavior.
  • Skill in using standard office equipment, including personal computer.
  • Knowledge of basic concepts of child development and developmental behavior characteristics.
  • Knowledge of basic effective behavior management techniques.
  • Knowledge of rules and procedures for child/student safety.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work with students in a positive and confident manner.
  • Ability to observe safe work practices.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative work relationships.
  • Ability to arrive to work in a timely manner.
  • Ability to attend required training.

  • A valid Washington State driver’s license is required at the time of appointment or at a time set by the Tribe.
  • A valid Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR certificate and Food Handler’s permit may be required at the time of appointment or at a time set by the Tribe.

Responsibilities

  • Assists lead teacher with instructional activities to provide learning experiences to individual and small groups of students.
  • Assists instructional personnel with the presentation of learning materials and instructional exercises.
  • Assists individual students and small groups of students to reinforce and follow up learning activities.
  • Monitors and assists students in a variety of instructional activities as a follow-up to the presentation of instructional concepts by instructional personnel.
  • Participates in training and assists in integrating Muckleshoot language and culture in the classroom setting.
  • Participates in school meetings, IEP/IFSP meetings, parent conferences, and in-services or other trainings; supports parent involvement in the classroom.
  • Supervises students in a variety of educational settings for up to 30-45 minutes at a time.
  • Uses positive reinforcement strategies and other appropriate techniques to assist students in the development of appropriate behavior and an appreciation of human diversity.
  • Assists in the preparation of a variety of instructional materials and learning aids for use with individual or small groups of students.
  • Maintains a variety of records and files, including confidential student records and information.
  • Requisitions, stores and maintains an appropriate inventory of textbooks, instructional materials, supplies and equipment.
  • May drive a van or automobile to transport students.
  • Assists lead teacher by using good judgment regarding appropriate action to assist injured or physically ill students.
  • Assists in maintaining an orderly, attractive and positive learning environment.
  • Loads and unloads students safely at designated stops and on field trips, helps to buckle children into the supplied five-point restraint.
  • Completes transportation records such as number of students transported, mileage, special runs, route directions, etc.
  • May transport children with special learning needs and physical challenges; may operate power lifts to load and unload students in wheelchairs; and may strap and tie down wheelchairs to ensure student safety.
