About The Position

Reporting to the VPAA or designee, the Early College Liaison is responsible for fostering positive relationships between Shaw University and the Wake Young Men’s Leadership Academy (WYMLA) and the Wake Young Women’s Leadership Academy (WYWLA) Early College programs (collectively known as the “Early College”) through effective and timely communication. As the chief advocate for and support to the Early College high school, this position provides strategic oversight, coordinates key partnerships, supports program implementation, and works collaboratively with secondary and postsecondary stakeholders to ensure student success and the effective operation of the Early College model.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required from an accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding and a strong commitment to cultural diversity.
  • Demonstrated mastery of relevant technological capacities (e.g. Microsoft Office suite) and ability to master college systems (e.g. Canvas).
  • If the College Liaison will teach college level courses, they must possess the minimum credential standards of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), which normally includes at least 18 graduate semester credit hours in the subject area or suitable approved justifications.

Responsibilities

  • Provides ongoing communication about academic resources, such as tutoring and/or other targeted student support services.
  • Maintains records including student files; prepares reports and surveys; collects and maintains statistical data.
  • Assists with the planning, scheduling, and execution of training programs, lectures, workshops, meetings and special events (Ex: Orientation, College Fair, Step-Up Day, etc)
  • Acts as a liaison to the academies to ensure smooth operations and quality service.
  • Oversees Early College planning to synchronize high school and college schedules, manage room allocation and instructor assignments, and address scheduling gaps when college is not in session.
  • Coordinate with secondary and postsecondary staff to align schedules, support student registration, and ensure access to required coursework.
  • Facilitates required placement testing for university courses, coordinating with appropriate University personnel and Deans of the two Leadership Academies.
  • Collaborates with academy deans in developing schedules that support gradual transitions to increasing levels of independence in postsecondary coursework.
  • Provide timely communication with university personnel on days when early college students will be absent due to WCPSS Teacher Workday, inclement weather, standardized testing, and other principal-approved school-related activities
  • Coordinate the use of college facilities.
  • Develop and assess student and program goals.
  • Coordinate and facilitate monthly meetings with Early College Administrators and the Vice President of Academic Affairs (or their designee) to assess program progress, address challenges, and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Ensure effective communication, collaboration, and alignment of goals to support student success and program growth.
  • Attend scheduled early college team meetings to share updates and collaborate on strategies to best support student success
  • Collaborate in communicating policy statements for students such as: Attendance, data collection, grading policies and procedures, behavior and code of conduct, parking, bus services, access to college facilities and resources (library, computer labs, etc.), and inclement weather coordination.
  • Facilitate policies and procedures for placement of students into postsecondary courses, including: Placement test scores coordination, EOC test scores, Portfolio development, Alternative assessments.
  • Assumes additional responsibilities and performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor or designee to support the strategic goals, operational effectiveness, and continuous improvement of the program.
  • Facilitate curriculum planning (Example: the “LeaderShift” courses) between secondary and postsecondary subject areas to reduce redundancy and maximize collaboration.
  • Facilitate cooperative planning to align secondary and postsecondary expectations.
  • Connect Early College students to student life on campus, through special events such as Black History month, student council, etc.
  • Communicate with parents of Early College students and university faculty concerning policy and procedures for Early College program.
  • Educate the university and the community at large concerning “Early College.”
  • Participate in as many parent high school activities as possible.
  • Collaborate with university and high school disability access service staff to ensure proper support.
  • Maintain a visible presence in the Early College program by regularly visiting classrooms, hallways, and campus facilities.
  • Provide quarterly presentations and informational sessions for students on topics that support college readiness and student success.
  • Remain accessible and responsive to students, faculty, and administrators through regular communication and published work schedules.
  • Build and maintain positive, professional relationships with university faculty, deans, administrators, and Early College leadership.
  • Foster a culture of trust, collaboration, mutual respect, and open communication among all program stakeholders.
  • Serve as an advocate for students and the Early College program by utilizing a student-centered approach that supports learning, growth, and success.
  • Communicate academic concerns, including Early Alert notifications, promptly to support student intervention and success.
  • Coordinate with university personnel to ensure timely communication regarding the posting of midterm and final grades and other important academic updates.
  • Collaborate with the Early College team to ensure students and faculty are safe during their time on campus
  • Monitors the ISC Building for maintenance concerns and reports identified needs to the appropriate college officials in a timely manner until resolved.
  • Support the daily supervision of students within the ISC Building and the campus community; communicate safety, security, and operational concerns to the appropriate college officials as warranted.
