About The Position

Under the general direction of the Calumet County Director of Special Education, this role involves creating a successful educational program and a safe, positive classroom environment to foster high levels of learning and personal growth in each student. The position aims to contribute to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students in alignment with the philosophy and goals of the Brillion School District. The role includes implementing all aspects of the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) process, developing and implementing curriculum, promoting active learning, differentiating instruction, monitoring student progress, and maintaining student records. Additionally, the teacher will communicate with parents, engage in professional development, participate in school programs, and uphold district policies. The position also involves mentoring other educators, establishing classroom behavior standards, and serving as a positive role model for students, instilling ethical principles and democratic values.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Special Education or a related educational field.
  • At least two years of related experience in special education.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from students, parents, administrators, school staff, and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate tactfully, clearly, concisely, and accurately with students, parents, and all school staff.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing software.
  • Appropriate Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (WI DPI) licensure for the position or the ability to acquire a license with provisions from WI DPI.
  • Knowledge of district-adopted curriculum and teaching strategies.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in the application and interpretation of department policies and regulations.
  • Good knowledge of current special education topics and methodologies.
  • Experience working with students with a wide range of disabilities.
  • Ability to create IEPs and collaborate with support staff to create holistic intervention plans.
  • Ability to initiate and utilize relationships to effect change.
  • Demonstrates empathy toward students and strives for positive student relationships.
  • Demonstrates the ability to interpret, support and uphold the standards, ethics and boundaries of the education profession.

Responsibilities

  • Implements all aspects of the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) process, including communication with team members, evaluation, reporting, IEP writing, IEP implementation, data collection, and progress reporting.
  • Reviews, revises, and writes curriculum according to district format.
  • Achieves district educational goals and objectives by promoting active learning and thinking using board-adopted curriculum and other learning tools.
  • Develops lesson objectives and/or unit plans, uses instructional materials, provides individualized and small-group instruction, and adapts curriculum as needed.
  • Systematically measures student performance using various assessment tools to measure learning.
  • Implements current best practices to promote student learning.
  • Differentiates lesson presentations, class activities, and assessments to meet individual student needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Monitors student academic progress and personal growth toward stated objectives.
  • Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff in assessing and resolving learning issues.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to achieve a classroom climate conducive to learning.
  • Arranges appropriate interventions if needed.
  • Maintains current records of students’ educational progress and summarizes progress for reporting.
  • Devises written and oral assignments and assessments that require analytical and critical thinking.
  • Communicates with parents through reports, conferences, and other means to discuss student progress.
  • Maintains and improves professional competence through staff development and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Participates and contributes to the planning, evaluation, and implementation of school and/or District programs.
  • Makes effective use of community resources to enhance the instructional program.
  • Upholds and enforces school rules, administrative regulations, and Board policy.
  • Supports the growth of initial and experienced educators through mentoring, collaborative planning, and coaching.
  • Develops rules of classroom behavior and procedure and maintains order in a fair and just manner.
  • Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day, as needed.
  • Serves as a positive role model for students, instilling ethical principles and democratic values.
