About The Position

The WWU Child Development Center (CDC), housed within Risk, Ethics, Safety, Resilience, and Enterprise Operations (RESR-EO), supports this mission by providing high-quality early childhood education and care for the children of WWU students, faculty, staff, and a limited number of alumni and community families. Through nurturing relationships, developmentally appropriate practices, and a strong connection to families and nature, the CDC supports the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development of young children while enabling parents and caregivers to pursue their academic and professional goals. The WWU Child Development Center participates in Washington State's Early Achievers quality recognition program (currant rating: 4) and is committed to continuous improvement and excellence in early learning. This Lead Classroom Teacher position reports to the Child Development Center Director and works collaboratively with Assistant Teachers and student staff. The position serves children ages 18-30 months and is a full-time, 11.5-month cyclic appointment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and professional experience.
  • Minimum of two years of experience working with children ages 18-30 months in a licensed early childhood education setting.
  • Strong organizational, observation, written, and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency with technology used in early childhood settings, including documentation of learning, online assessment systems, data entry, and standard office software.

Nice To Haves

  • Three years’ experience in an early learning program with children ranging in ages 1-5
  • Knowledge and experience training and supervising classroom assistants
  • Experience using Teaching Strategies GOLD and other technology-based tools for assessment and documentation
  • Experience mentoring practicum and intern students

Responsibilities

  • Meet all Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) requirements including MERIT registration, current First-Aid/CPR certification, Bloodborne Pathogens training, Safe Sleep training, and negative TB test
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive, collaborative relationships with children, families, colleagues, supervisors, and individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage an active classroom environment, including supervising and mentoring student employees, interns, and other classroom support staff.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 50 pounds and actively participate in classroom activities, including floor play and outdoor supervision
