About The Position

The Early Childhood classroom teacher is responsible for establishing a developmentally appropriate classroom environment and curriculum for preschool children enrolled in the Early Childhood program. This role involves preparing and implementing lesson plans, creating a welcoming classroom environment, supervising support staff, and planning engaging activities both inside and outside the classroom. The teacher will also be responsible for implementing assessments, documenting student progress, requisitioning materials, and collaborating with various specialists to support student development. Additionally, the role includes encouraging family involvement, conducting parent-teacher conferences, and maintaining student records.

Requirements

  • Bachelors’ Degree from an accredited college or university
  • Early Childhood Type O4 license with Special Education Endorsement required.
  • 2-3 years of classroom experience, except in the case of a new graduate preferred
  • Ability to assess children and knowledge of early childhood development.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively on a collaborative team.
  • Ability to effectively work with students with a history of behavioral, social/emotional and/or developmental disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare lesson plans and implement them to provide a developmentally appropriate classroom environment that assists students assigned to the classroom with achieving specific educational goals.
  • Create a classroom environment that welcomes all students and supports the school's mission statement.
  • Supervise and collaborate with support staff assigned to the classroom to develop general classroom procedures, goals, schedules, behavior expectation and classroom activities for students.
  • Plan and implement activities inside and outside the classroom that expose a child to various experiences to broaden a child’s perspective, such as field trips, cooking activities, and experiments.
  • Implement appropriate assessments and document student progress as required by the district and ISBE Preschool for All grant.
  • Review, develop, and requisition materials for the classroom.
  • Work in partnership with the Early Childhood principal and family coordinators to plan and encourage family involvement in their children's education.
  • Work with the District’s speech/language therapist, physical therapist, social worker, multicultural staff, and occupational therapist to assess each child's educational strengths and weaknesses assigned to his/her classroom and prepare and implement specific goals for these students.
  • Conduct formal parent-teacher conferences at least twice a year and schedule informal conferences and home visits as necessary to discuss student progress.
  • Establish and maintain procedures for communicating with families on a regular and frequent basis.
  • Supervise and provide ongoing training for teaching assistants assigned to the classroom.
  • Perform all duties as the case manager for children with Individual Educational Plans assigned to the classroom.
  • Maintain all special education folders, cumulative records and all other student records as require by law, district policy and administrative regulations.
  • Attend all staff meetings and in-service activities as directed.
  • Meet all requirements for classroom teachers as outlined by the ISBE Preschool for All grant.
  • Perform any and all additional duties as assigned by the Board of Education, Superintendent of Schools, and/or the Urbana Early Childhood Principal.
