About The Position

WSP is seeking a Full-Time Early Career Structural Engineer for its Portland, ME office. This role involves working within multidisciplinary teams on building projects, focusing on engineering design and analysis tasks under the supervision of a senior structural engineer. The nature of assignments and responsibilities will evolve based on performance and growth. The position requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, with an encouragement for self-direction and independent research. This is an opportunity to advance one's career on structural projects within a diverse team environment. Project types include studies, upgrades, renovations, and new construction for various clients, encompassing secure facilities, building renovations, industrial facilities, water/wastewater infrastructure, and design standards development. The role is primarily office/home office based but may involve travel to client facilities.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
• 0 to 1 years of relevant post education experience
• Excellent analytical mindset.
• Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
• Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
• Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
• Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
• Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (i.e., AutoCAD, REVIT, RISA, STAAD Pro, or similar).
• Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
• Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
• Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Nice To Haves

• EIT or Eligible to sit for the Fundamental of Engineering (FE) exam is required Engineer in Training Certification.
• Prior internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.
• A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.

Responsibilities

• Assist with performing basic professional structural engineering work relating to conducting research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, building, and infrastructure to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
• Perform routine engineering functions and provide entry-level technical assistance on various design requirements.
• Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures.
• Complete training on assigned tasks.
• Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
• Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
• Developing structural models to solve engineering problems based on sound engineering principles.
• Analyzing new and existing structures per required code.
• Assisting in production work as required with Revit and or AutoCAD.
• Developing calculation packages as required.
• Performing site visits of existing structures to document existing conditions of structural components, assist in evaluating their capacity and ability to resist new loading requirements, and in producing technical reports with technically sound recommendations.
• Being able to use engineering fundamentals to solve seemingly complex problems.
