WSP is currently initiating a search for a Early Career Human Health Risk Assessor for our Chelmsford, Massachusetts office. We encourage you to apply for this opportunity.  We are seeking a motivated candidate who is willing to learn to join our current team of risk assessment professionals in executing risk assessments as well as project planning, public outreach, and stakeholder communication. Risk assessments will be prepared to meet the requirements of the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, and many other States’ environmental regulatory programs. This position will involve the implementation of project work associated with multimedia (air, water, soil, and biota) risk assessments. The selected candidate will contribute to the preparation of risk assessment reports as a member of project-specific risk assessment teams. This position offers the opportunity to learn from and grow with an established risk practice and to address complex environmental challenges by executing the following roles/responsibilities:

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Toxicology, Biology, Public Health, or related scientific discipline
  • 0-1 year of relevant experience in human health risk assessment
  • Knowledge of the principles and standards of scientific study
  • Familiarity using Microsoft Excel for the presentation of data, calculations, and data evaluation
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, listen and engage, including communicating technical information effectively
  • Ability to work effectively with team members as well as independently
  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Must be well organized, able to manage and prioritize several assignments at one time, and deliver on time and within budget

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree  in Toxicology, Biology, Public Health, or related scientific discipline
  • Knowledge of human health risk assessment principles, procedures, and guidance particularly USEPA CERCLA and MCP is desirable
  • Experience with risk assessment-specific tasks (presentation of analytical data and dose-response data, selection of chemicals of potential concern, calculation of exposure point concentrations (Excel and PRO UCL), and calculation of cancer risk and Hazard Index) is desirable
  • Experience with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances is desirable
  • Experience or interest in ecological risk assessment is a bonus

Responsibilities

  • Extensively use Microsoft Excel to analyze chemical data and calculate human exposure risk.
  • Learn and use standard risk assessment spreadsheet tools.
  • Learn and understand regulatory and technical requirements for conducting risk assessments under specific regulatory programs.
  • Document in written text risk assessment activities that have been completed, including data evaluation. selection of chemicals of potential concern, exposure assessment, toxicity assessment, and calculations of cancer risk and noncancer hazard (both routine and non-routine calculations).
  • Conduct quality assurance/quality control activities for work products prepared by colleagues.
  • Conduct work activities within identified budget and schedule requirements.
  • Contribute to the preparation of proposals to win new work for small and large projects that include a risk assessment component.
  • May contribute to technical presentations or papers for publication.
