About The Position

This externship program at Vetco Total Care hospitals aims to provide veterinary students with valuable hands-on experience under the direct supervision of skilled doctors. Participants will gain exposure to and practical skills in a variety of medical, surgical, diagnostic, and dental procedures. Vetco Total Care is dedicated to the professional development of veterinary students and welcomes participation from accredited university externship programs.

  • Must be able to provide proof of medical and professional liability insurance.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with a mentor for guidance and development of hands-on veterinary experience and knowledge.
  • Learn components of the physical examination.
  • Observe and then assist during surgeries.
  • Continue to develop technical skills such as blood draws, fecal analysis, urine analysis, catheter setting, and ET tube placement.
  • Learn all aspects of the hospital environment by observing and participating in procedures with the mentor.
  • Review patient history, differentials, diagnoses, and costs.
  • Create treatment protocols.
  • Calculate drug dosages and fluid rates.
  • Support the mentor with client communication.
  • Ensure the safety of pets, clients, and team members by adhering to all medical standard operating protocols.
  • Gain understanding in safety and restraint procedures.
  • Follow sterility procedures.
  • Understand radiation and controlled substance compliance.
  • Perform only care that is outlined in a State Practice Act and only under the direct supervision of a DVM and/or Licensed Veterinary Technician.
  • All responsibilities and duties will be dependent on education level and experience.
  • Timely submission of all paperwork and licenses required.
