About The Position

DT STUDY is the dedicated academic support mechanism for students in the MFA and BFA Design & Technology (DT) programs, including freshmen and students taking DT electives. Our mission is to empower students to develop a deeper understanding of their coursework through personalized, one-on-one tutoring and accessible, collaborative help. We are seeking knowledgeable and enthusiastic DT students to join our team as DT Study Tutors. In this role, you will provide critical academic support to your peers across various DT subject areas. You will be the go-to expert, helping students overcome challenges in their projects and strengthening the overall DT community through three primary channels: scheduled one-on-one appointments, walk-in help, and online support via Discord. This is a perfect opportunity to reinforce your own knowledge, develop teaching and communication skills, and contribute to the success of your peers. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between SENS-UAW, Local 7902 and the University.

Requirements

  • Current student in the MFA or BFA Design & Technology program (or a highly qualified student who has completed multiple DT electives).
  • Strong academic standing and a demonstrated proficiency in one or more DT subject areas (e.g., critical computation, physical computing, creative coding, design principles, web development, game design and development, etc.).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly, patiently, and poetically.
  • High level of reliability, punctuality, and professional responsibility in managing a schedule.
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace (Calendar, Meet, Docs), Discord, and Zoom.
  • A collaborative and empathetic approach to peer-to-peer learning.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous tutoring, teaching, or mentorship experience is a plus.
  • Experience with, and active presence on Discord.
  • Ability to support students across a wide range of DT topics.
  • Availability to work during select weekend hours.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct one-on-one tutoring sessions (both in-person and remote) that are tailored to the specific project and learning goals outlined by the student before the appointment.
  • Manage your tutoring schedule efficiently using Google Calendar, ensuring all remote sessions are scheduled through the designated platform.
  • Provide friendly and effective walk-in support at the DT Study table on the 12th floor (D12) of the 6 E 16th Street building, assisting students with quick questions and project hurdles.
  • Actively monitor and respond to student inquiries in the designated DT Study channels on the Design & Technology and Critical Computation Discord servers during assigned shifts on social media and Discord channels.
  • Offer clear explanations and guidance to help students develop problem-solving skills and a deeper conceptual understanding, rather than just providing answers.
  • Maintain a positive, patient, and professional demeanor in all interactions, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
  • Adhere to all session protocols, including the 1-hour session length and appointment priority system.
