About The Position

The DSP (Direct Support Professional) role at The Arc Putnam involves providing direct support and supervision to individuals with developmental differences, ensuring their safety, comfort, and the protection of their rights. This position requires understanding each individual's unique needs, including their disabilities, medical and behavioral status, personal goals, and preferred training/support methods. The DSP will assist individuals in making choices, following established training and support plans, and documenting progress electronically. Effective communication and collaboration with co-workers, supervisors, and external stakeholders are essential. The role also includes responding to medical and behavioral crises, maintaining a safe work environment, and adhering to all organizational policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Good communication and writing skills are required.
  • Must have valid Florida driver's license with good driving record.
  • Must be able to pass a DOT physical.
  • Must be willing and able to drive agency vehicles.
  • Must be able to pass background and drug screening.
  • Possess emotional stability sufficient for performing all tasks related to the job including times of medical and behavioral crises for individuals.

Responsibilities

  • Responsibly supervise individuals to ensure safety, comfort, and protection of individual rights.
  • Develop a working knowledge of each person served regarding disabilities, medical/behavioral status, goals, and training/support methods.
  • Assist people in making choices by educating them about options and respecting their decisions.
  • Follow directions for implementing and documenting training, support, and behavioral plans.
  • Electronically document and record events, activities, training sessions, and progress.
  • Interact with co-workers, supervisory, and administrative staff in a courteous manner.
  • Communicate clearly, respectfully, and effectively through verbal and written methods.
  • Immediately address and report any emergency situations or potential safety hazards.
  • Review and comply with all organizational policies, procedures, and directives.
  • Maintain appropriate dress, good hygiene, and professional behavior.
  • Work flexible hours on occasion based on program needs.
  • Provide routine transportation of people receiving services.
  • Provide special training, such as leading discussions, exercise groups, or computer training.
  • Keep accurate records of attendance and document transportation/attendance sheets.
  • Supervise assigned areas during special times (e.g., lunch, break) to ensure consumer safety.
  • Respond to medical and behavioral crises to assure the safety of consumers and staff.
  • Complete unusual incident reports as required.
  • Assist co-workers as needed.
  • Make positive, creative suggestions for improvements.
  • Communicate with Support Coordinators, family members, providers, and others.
  • Attend required training.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Manager.
