About The Position

The Dry Utilities Superintendent is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising all dry utility construction activities on large-scale infrastructure projects. This role oversees the installation, protection, relocation, and coordination of utilities such as electrical, communications, fibre optic, gas, and street lighting, ensuring work is completed safely, on schedule, and in compliance with project specifications and regulatory requirements. The position serves as the primary on-site liaison between utility owners, subcontractors, and project teams.

Requirements

  • Diploma or Journeyperson Certification in Construction, Electrical, Civil, or a related trade/discipline.
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 8–10 years of progressive experience in infrastructure or heavy civil construction.
  • At least 5 years supervising dry utilities (electrical, communications, fibre, gas, street lighting).
  • Experience on large, complex infrastructure or transportation projects.
  • Prior experience coordinating multiple utility owners concurrently.
  • In-depth knowledge of dry utility construction methods, standards, and sequencing.
  • Strong understanding of utility coordination, permitting, and outage planning.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineered drawings and specifications.
  • Working knowledge of construction scheduling and field cost control.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, schedule, and supervise all dry utility work including temporary and permanent installations, relocations, and tie-ins.
  • Ensure daily construction activities align with project drawings, specifications, and sequencing requirements.
  • Resolve constructability and field coordination issues proactively.
  • Coordinate with utility owners, designers, inspectors, and subcontractors to secure permits, approvals, outages, and inspections.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for dry utility stakeholders and manage interface with other disciplines such as roads, structures, and wet utilities.
  • Track progress against the construction schedule and identify risks impacting milestones.
  • Support cost control by monitoring labour, equipment, and subcontractor performance.
  • Provide accurate forecasts, look-ahead schedules, and input into change management processes.
  • Ensure installations meet quality standards and utility owner requirements.
  • Oversee inspections, testing, and deficiency resolution.
  • Maintain accurate construction records including daily reports, as-builts, and utility coordination logs.
  • Lead by example in promoting a strong safety culture.
  • Ensure all work complies with company safety policies, OH&S legislation, and environmental requirements.
  • Conduct field inspections, hazard assessments, and safety meetings; address non-compliance immediately.
