The Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Use (BADU) aims to reduce alcohol and substance use-related harm in New York. BADU implements and evaluates interventions through various strategies including policy analysis, epidemiology, harm reduction, and public outreach. The Office of Research, Surveillance, Policy, and Communications within BADU conducts surveillance, program evaluation, and research, maintaining databases and producing reports. In 2021, BADU launched a drug-checking pilot using FTIR and immunoassay test strips at syringe service program locations to provide insights into the unregulated drug supply and fact-based information to users.
