About The Position

The Occupational Therapy Department at WWRC is seeking a Driver Instructor to provide Driver Education and Traffic Safety instruction to students. This position will prepare students to obtain a Virginia Learner’s Permit and/or Driver’s License using the WWRC curriculum, DMV materials, and behind‑the‑wheel instruction. This role requires strong communication skills, attention to safety, collaboration within the service team, and the ability to support students through the Driver Education process. This is a 12-month position.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of driver education and traffic safety curriculum and instruction requirements and rules of the road
  • Knowledge of disabling conditions and understanding of disability impact on driving functions
  • Skill in instructing students in driver education and traffic safety
  • Ability to conduct on-the-road instructional sessions
  • Ability to organize and manage a program of instruction
  • In compliance with Department of Motor Vehicle requirements for Driver Training Schools, instructors must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be able to document with driving records at least five years of licensed driving experience, two years of which shall be completed in the United States or a territory thereof.
  • Driving records must exhibit the individual’s name, driver’s license number, the date of issue, the issuing jurisdiction, the date of expiration and notations of any convictions, license withdrawals, suspensions, revocations, cancellations, disqualifications or restrictions.
  • Must have and maintain a driving record with no more than six demerit points.
  • Commercial Driver Training License (requires Criminal History Check annually) or be eligible for the Commercial Driver Training License and be able to maintain the Commercial Driver Training License each year.

Nice To Haves

  • If driving instruction will be provided to students under 19 years of age, then employee must successfully complete six semester hours in driver education approved by the Department of Motor Vehicles consisting of 3 semester hours of “Introduction to Driver Education: Driver Task Analysis and, 3 semester hours of “Instructional Principles of Teaching Driver Education” within a reasonably timeframe or have a valid Virginia teaching certificate with a driver education endorsement.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct students using Driver Education curriculum, DMV Operator’s Manual, and related materials.
  • Reinforce appropriate driving behaviors and attitudes that support safety and work readiness.
  • Maintain a safe, orderly learning environment and enforce expectations consistently.
  • Document evaluations and training results, enter service units in AWARE, and communicate with counselors and team members.
  • Manage scheduling and routine aspects of the Driver Education program.
  • Maintain positive, professional relationships with students, families, and staff while protecting confidentiality.
  • Attend driving meetings and complete other driving‑related duties as assigned.
  • Inspect Driver Education vehicles to ensure equipment and safety standards are met.
  • Maintain and update curriculum to align with State regulations.
