About The Position

This role assists the driver in unloading product at customer locations according to customer invoices, Preferred Work Methods, and company policies. The Driver Trainee will learn the route on the current bid, assist in all aspects of route paperwork, and work safely by following SYGMA’s Preferred Work Methods. The position also involves attending CDL School when scheduled. Additional duties may include assisting the driver in pre-trip inspections and coupling of equipment, ensuring tandems are properly and safely locked out, providing assistance in routing with map reading and giving directions, helping with situations involving low clearances, and assisting with delivery set up at the customer location. This includes directing the driver to ensure proper trailer setup and assisting in backing situations by watching for hazards and communicating with the driver.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED or the equivalent in work experience is necessary.
  • Must be able to read and write clearly.
  • Commercial Vehicle Drivers must have the ability to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public, to understand highway traffic signs and signals in the English language, to respond to official inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly to customers.
  • Must be able to read at a distance close to the eyes and at arm’s length, with or without correction.
  • A valid driver’s license, CDL-A permit - Required

Nice To Haves

  • Previous food distribution and frozen food handling is preferred.
  • May be required to back/direct driver through hand signals or verbal communication.

Responsibilities

  • Unload product according to customer specifications and SYGMA delivery procedures at customer locations.
  • Develop and establish good relationships with customers by providing excellent, courteous service.
  • Learn route on current bid.
  • Assist in all aspects of route paperwork.
  • Work safely by following SYGMA’s Preferred Work Methods.
  • Attend CDL School when scheduled.
  • Assist the driver in the pre-trip and coupling of equipment to ensure the vehicle is safe to operate.
  • Assist with ensuring tandems are properly and safely locked out to meet any applicable laws for weight requirements.
  • Provide assistance in routing with map reading and giving directions on route.
  • Help with situations involving low clearances, i.e., getting out of vehicle and directing driver under a low underpass to ensure proper clearance.
  • Assist with delivery set up at the customer location, including all three compartments of the trailer, and requires directing the driver to ensure the proper set up is attained safely.
  • Assist driver in backing situations by getting out of the truck and watching for hazards, communicate using hand signals and or verbal communication.
